Times OnLine apologize to Christopher Tolkien re: Lawsuit .. Can't Post

Last months article on Times Online relating to Christopher Tolkien saying this was "a Last Crusade" regarding the lawsuit with New Line -
Now has an apology ... mending the errors of their ways?

From the News in Brief:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/...k/article4187864.ece

Quote

In our report of the litigation between the Tolkien family and New Line Cinema, producers of The Lord of the Rings (May 25), we did not make it clear that Christopher Tolkien is suing as a trustee of the Tolkien Trust, a registered charity, and the JRR Tolkien 1967 Discretionary Settlement. It was another member of the family who referred to the action as “one last crusade”, not Mr Tolkien, and the hearing on June 6 was to fix a date for the eventual trial, not actually to halt Hollywood plans to film The Hobbit. We apologise to the trustees and Mr Tolkien for these errors.

Its nice to see Unsure ... could have been a bit bigger article, ut apologies are usually in print that needs a magnifying glass ...

It will be interesting to see their follow up reporting on this from now on.
I wonder if they were contacted about their errors ... or they just read it all on torn Wink

Cheers Elven

About time! [In reply to] Can't Post

It may not have been big, but it is better than nothing. Well, at least they have apologised - that was overdue. Like you, I'd like to know what brought about this change of mind. Well, we'll see if they will report the truth in the future ...

Thanks, Elven!

The first sin of journalism... [In reply to] Can't Post

...is to not be sure of all your facts.

And I think it's a shame that retractions are usually tucked away somewhere practically out of sight. If I ever become World Dictator, one of my reforms would be a requirement that all retractions in the news be given equal prominence as the original report.

Thanks for reporting this Elven! :)

When you are ready [In reply to] Can't Post

to become the World Dicatator, then please consult me at once, I'll give you a long list of other necessary reforms! Wink

I remember that one of the tabloids here once printed something untrue about someone (can't even remember what and who) and the one they lied about went to Court about it. They were forced to print a retraction just in the same way they made the initial announcement - at page one and in big letters Evil. Only a pity that they usually have to be forced by a judge to do that.

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

At least they clarified things. [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll bet they were enlightened directly or indirectly through TORn. All roads lead here when it comes to Tolkien, don'tchaknow ;)

Clarified Only Somewhat [In reply to] Can't Post

The part about it being some other member of the Tolkien family (without identifying who) that allegedly made the "last crusade" comment is yet more irresponsible journalism. Either report who said it and what the real circumstances of the statement was, or don't say anything at all.

By the way, if anyone is interested in my thoughts about the latest developments in the suit, you can read them here.

Fact Checks [In reply to] Can't Post

I wish the media would get in the habit of checking their facts. This sensationalistic journalism is really getting old.
