After coming out of retirement, New Zealand gold-medal winning Olympian Mark Todd has made the New Zealand equestrian team for the Beijing Olympics - riding a horse named Gandalf: New Zealand team and mounts: Mark Todd (Gandalf), Andrew Nicholson (Lord Killinghurst), Caroline Powell (Lenamore), Joe Meyer (Snip), Heelan Tompkins (Sugoi). http://www.stuff.co.nz/4587206a1823.html
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. (this one is translated roughly from Dutch, so bare with me...) Gandalf, Gimli and Legolas are going to the Olympics. The event they are participating in, is the Magic Pool. The Magic Pool fills itself with whatever the participant yells as he jumps in. Gimli is up first, and as he approaches the pool he yells: "Beer!" The Magic Pool fills itself with beer, and Gimli quickly makes his way across. Next up is Legolas. As he prances his way towards the pool, he yells: "Mead!" Legolas gracefully shield-surfs his way across the pool, in a time which even beats Gimli's (to which Gimli replies: "No Elf will beat me!" or something along the lines). But Gandalf think he can beat the two and claim the mithril medal. He straightens his hood, rearranges his scarf and makes a run towards the pool. But as he approaches the Magic Pool, he accidentally trips on his beard. "Crap," he exclaimes and he dives into the pool...

That was evil!
We're discussing the BBC Lord of the Rings Radio Play on the Movie Discussion - LOTR board. With caffeine, all things are possible. The pity of Bilbo will screw up the fate of many.

he will definitely be a medal prospect. The horse is excellent across country and a good show jumper. Of course, anything can happen with horses, but this is our strongest team for some time.

...you can "see where he falls in the competition." I would've preferred they say 'where he finishes'. I'd not use the word "falls" in connection with an eventer, especially the way things have gone the last two years. It is tempting fate a bit too much for me. When I saw Mark's dressage phase on TV I wondered how long it would take for one of the horsey TORNados to post that Gandalf was comoeting in the Olympics. May he be luckier than Frodo. (shudder) I have to root for the home team, of course, but I have a great fondness for Todd and wish him well. Alas, I'm missing the cross country phase on account of work (!) and have nothing to record with at the moment. From what I could see, the Aussies were kicking some serious butt. Anyone watching the dressage tomorrow? (Tomorrow in US, that is.) The men's 400m swim relay was the most exciting thing I've seen so far (other than the opening ceremonies),
