Eowyn sketch Can't Post

Not too sure if I'm happy with this or not, but then I do tend to be very self-critical. I'm thinking of using this in a bigger sketch I've got in mind and I wanted some opinions on it. Do I keep it or ditch it?

Cheers Kel x

if you just lower her hairline a bit, and soften up her face, it'll be fine.

I know it's only a pre-lim, but it was really starting to annoy me, which is why I was looking for any suggestions. I'll give it a try, though I'm seriously thinking of starting it all over again. I've erased bits of it so many times it's looking really smudged Crazy

I can't really place it, but maybe if you closed the gap between the bottom of her nose and top of her lips a bit, I think it'd be fine. And I'd keep it. Smile

Thanks [In reply to] Can't Post

I've actually found a better copy of the original picture, shows more detail and it's helping heaps. In the other one you couldn't really see where her nose ended or where her hairline started properly, so I had to guess (not too well).

So I am gonna complete it, if it does work out I'll post the finished sketch in here.

Thanks again

not a bad start... [In reply to] Can't Post

it's typical for artists, in any medium or field to redo and redo. The trick is to openly critique with rigorous honesty and without self-flagilating. It's all a process, a series of change and growth . . . there is no "arrival". Just like life.

For guidance,
1. nostrils are too big... pushing her nose way up
2. cheek lines need more subtle shading
3. Mouth is too low
4. chin line curves up too much. (one of my all-too-common mistakes: making curving lines curve too much)
5. eye lids need to be more rounded, less squared off.
6. the left side of the face edge line needs a little work.

Two books I recommend:
2. The Natural Way to Draw : A Working Plan for Art Study
Kimon Nicolaides, Mariner Books (February 1990) This book is regarded by many as one of the best drawing books ever written. It is designed as a long course of study which requires constant practice. It is not suitable for those who want 'instant results'. If you are serious about learning to draw, whether a beginner or more experienced, this book may be for you.

3. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
Betty Edward's classic drawing book has recently been updated and re-printed. There is no doubt that there is a lot of quality information in this book, though you will either love it or hate it. Edwards spends a lot of time discussing the mental processes of drawing, emphasising the difference between seeing and knowing. The illustrations are excellent, but this book will suit a keen reader best. I recommend you get hold of a copy and decide for yourself.

I know it's got lots of problems [In reply to] Can't Post

I've actually been doing portrature for quite a while now, and couldn't work out why I just couldn't get her face "right", for me anyway and I'm a very tough critic on myself. Kept asking my husband does this look right and he compared it to the printed picture and said "Yep" (though I think he'd say that anyway Crazy ) I did wonder if it was because I was doing a female face this time, as in the past I've always tended to draw male faces, not sure why, maybe because guys faces are more natural, they don't mind showing or seeing the lines etc. Whereas we try to hide them. They tend to be more "interesting". Well it's a challenge and I enjoy that Cool

The original pic was terrible, you couldn't see her eyes, nose, hairline or ear properly, the decoration on the top of her dress wasn't there at all. I know all this now as I've found a much better quality picture *smacks head* Didn't notice how small the jpg size of the first one was, so the resolution once printed was *bleah*.

Thanks for the help. I am doing a new one from the new picture so I'm hoping it'll turn out much better.

As one prone to . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

be self-critical, I had to learn how to divorce myself from doing that during critique sessions in school. I was a bit more sucessful at than others since I learned how to do that in all my self-improvement & healing, recovery work over the years. I also was lucky to have teachers early on that taught how critical it was to be able to do that.

It was very painful to watch my co-students going through critiques and taking suggestions as being about them rather than the growing and learning process of art. I loved critiques... I loved seeing how other students came up with solutions to the problem (assignment) & discussing that process... which is what a lot of art is.... solving problems.

I get that issue of low-res images... it's tough to see the details sometimes. I good image is sometimes tough to find on line. And getting tougher. There aren't as many resources as a few years ago. I have a collection of websites that I go to for getting images to draw from if you'd like any links.

I will open them in PhotoShop . . . great to be able to zoom in for details... and the guides are fantastic to restablish placement & relationship of how all the parts fit together. Example: how the edge of the nose lines up with the eye, etc. And I can bump up the contrast in curves to see better.

Have fun

DoN

Would love to know those sites :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

And I'm extremely self critical, don't think I've actually produced a piece yet that I've been "totally" happy with Blush I actually submitted an exam piece once that I HATED, with "This is a piece of utter crap" written large on the back. Got into heaps of trouble with my lecturer over that one LOL. Strangely enough, they loved it, go figure Crazy

And must admit Blush I was cheating a little here. I'd gotten to the stage where I'd been looking at the drawing for sooooo long that I couldn't "see" it anymore. So decided to post it up on here and get some "free" new eyes on it and save myself several months of "why isn't this working".

So happy with the new image I found, it's in black and white and the detail is much much better.

Would you mind if I pm'd you with it as I develop it? It would be great to get another opinion as I go (and save me months of "what's wrong with this!!!! tearing hair out".

Would you believe in the first image it looked like her nose and cheek were one? LOL

Thanks again

Cheers Kel x

I always wanted siblings. I thought it would be cool when we would get to be adults and we could bond. But as I child I was so used to the attention that I didn't care. I have budgies to! My brothers and I do get on well now we're "grown ups", though for many years I was the only one that everyone kept in touch with. My brothers were always arguing, finally took the deaths of one of our nephews and our uncle for them to bury the hatchett. Now it's like it was when we were kids, lots of fun Cool sad way for it to come about though.

Lol, I like the names. For my birds, the yellow one is Sunny, the green one is Buzz. Everyone asks me why I gave him such a wierd a name, but I don't think it's wierd.

That is sad that it took such a sad event to repair the strife. Sometimes things like that happen for a reason. My mom has five other siblings and she doesn't get along with all of them. But it's great that you guys are all talking again!
