We didn't go to the abbey this time, that'll be for a future visit. I've visited the abbey before, long ago when they had an attraction close by called The Shrewsbury Quest, including Brother Cadfael's herb garden and hut, scriptorium etc and a crime-solving treasure hunt for the youngsters. It isn't there any more, sadly - not enough Cadfael fans to keep it going, as time passes, I suppose. If you go to Google images there are pictures of it. As I mentioned in my response to Altaira, we never know what will sell on our stall, so we try to have a bit of everything available!

the whole Cadfael phenomenon was very popular for a while; I think the Abbey gift shop (or maybe the one at the Shrewsbury Quest?) sold 'Beringar' branded souvenirs, calligraphy sets, quill pens, lavender bags etc. No sign of Madog of the dead boat and his coracle now - just lots of rowers and an hourly river cruise!

including a long, twisting section on an unsealed road, as the Awakino Gorge was closed again. I've just got home and checked on the situation with the gorge, to see that it reopened less than an hour ago.
At least I'm home! And I saw a part of the country that I have no desire to revisit.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
