One bit of Hunt for Gollum news: he'll start filming in NZ in July.
Ian is a wonderful storyteller and the entire interview is a delight, but the real showstopper is at the end when he delivers a Shakespeare monologue.

I wish we could guarantee a fine July weather-wise for him, but this summer hasn't been one of Wellington's best, to tell the truth.  . Our winter might even be better over all. Time will tell. We'll hope for the best on his account.
He is a very fine story teller, indeed. He and Colbert spoke so movingly about every job behind the scenes of a play or film being needed to make it happen, and of it being a special world that's created for everyone involved. It was delightful to hear him describe his very young self reacting to a live play for the first time to prove the point. He found his calling very early. The gentleman had me in tears through his entire monologue.
A local theatre group will be staging King Lear this month. It made me so wish I could see McKellen play Lear. Guess what! There's a 2008 Royal Shakespeare Company version with him as Lear on YouTube! And Sylvester McCoy is also in the cast.

Isn't our wandering Wizard STILL so captivating and so much fun!?! For that impromptu performance... what a stunner! I'm so SO happy he's a part of The Hunt For Gollum!
And praise for Stephen Colbert and his passion for Tolkien, the books, and the films! He's given all of the cast and Peter so much deserved time and enthusiasm! He's also a very worthy Wizard for being an over-the-top geek! How awesome he was here to honour them all for this 25th Anniversary! *bows deeply*

Just a couple of months after we arrived to live in Wellington in 2010, Sir Ian appeared here in Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" as Estragon. I was a few rows back center. As believably strong and full of purpose as he was as Gandalf, he was just as believable as the helpless, forgetful Estragon. He does surprise with unexpected, unintentional moments of insight, but "Nothing to be done", is certainly not something we would expect the wizard to say. 'Try every trick in the book" or "Stand and fight" is our Gandalf, and McKellen is brilliant as either character.

How great that you were able to see him as Estragon! Yes, he really is a magnificent actor. We were so lucky to have him as our Gandalf.
