Sadly, no massage therapy [In reply to] Can't Post

She goes to a small town VA health clinic (she's a Navy vet on disability) where an ex-military medic devised "battlefield acupuncture." He expanded how he used acupuncture for soldiers while on active duty. So the procedure is definitely unique and field-tested. She gets 4 tiny/short needles along the upper edge and along the back and one on that nub at the canal of each ear held in place with a bit of bandage tape. They either fall out or she removes them after a few days. We're hoping the clinic doesn't close. It's always busy.

Sadly, they don't offer massage which she would get on her own when she could afford it. Also sadly, because of her fibromyalgia, she can't always tolerate the force of massage. She's a mess... but she's very cute :)

Decompression can be fun :) [In reply to] Can't Post

But it can also be time-muddying to go from perpetual activity and thought provoking intensity to the brakes being put on and slowing down to a crawl ;) Enjoy the transition!

Sweeeeet! [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh how I miss those mountains, valleys, sheep and even the cows! That is a long trip and a long time to be doing away from home. And I think it's good to have time for each of you to have a little change in the routine. Especially when you have this moment when it all comes back together again. Kind of an extreme for him, though, just to get an apple pie ;)

ENJOY!!!

Good for you to kitty-sit :) [In reply to] Can't Post

Your friend will have a much better time of it knowing kitty is safe and entertained. I love the cats that think they're dogs. I have one of those, too. Coffey... and she's NUTS! Try crumpling up a small piece of paper and throwing it across the room. If kitty can fetch... you've got a winner!

Enjoy your weekend :D

I had already agreed to cat-sit when I saw [In reply to] Can't Post

a documentary on, of all things, parrots as pets. I admit I previously thought of parrots as rather dumb and cute, so the show was an eye-opener on 1) how smart they are, and 2) how emotional they are. The point being that a husband was gone for a month (wife stayed home), came back from trip, and their parrot plucked out all its feathers overnight, a sort of protest at being left behind by the hubby, I guess.

Anyway, it made me more committed to keep the cat happy while its doting owners are gone, because I don't want it "going parrot" on them. But it's only a weekend, not a month, and I'm sure all will be fine.

Almost [In reply to] Can't Post

No leash needed, but cuddles and greets like a dog, and has a sort of "guard dog" demeanor when I enter the house without owners present, like "you shouldn't be here, but I'm too old and too nice to fight, but I'd call 911 and report you if I could reach a phone." Yeah, it's all body language.

Amazing! [In reply to] Can't Post

That's very extensive - and as "battlefield acupuncture" it must be quite effective!

Oh gosh, that's a point, massage may not work with fibromyalgia, she has to be very cautious. She's got so much going on - but she's a true trooper! Heart

I know a family [In reply to] Can't Post

They had their parrot for over 20 years. Parrots have longevity, so it's quite a commitment. Theirs was VERY opinionated and let it be know at full volume all the time! Plucking feathers is a huge sign of stress! I had parakeets that would do the same thing. Their parrot was quite aggressive and bit the back of my hand 15 yrs ago... which still is numb in that spot! However, when their house caught fire in the middle of the night, he was louder than the smoke alarms and woke the entire family giving them time to escape (carrying the cage) within minutes of it all going up in flames.

Now that is a beloved pet [In reply to] Can't Post

I had no idea that parrots outlived cats and dogs, but they certainly do, and as you said, that's a commitment, and the documentary covered a "parrot rescue" asylum for abandoned parrots, and there were many. Even paying $1000, people tire of them quickly, and yes, they bite! Ouch--sorry about your hand. But what a great story about the parrot saving the family from a burning house!

well. I'm back [In reply to] Can't Post

from the first of my spring journeys. Had a wonderful few days in Denver seeing friends and sights (did a tour up into the mountains, visited Red Rocks Amphitheater, and spent half a day at the Botanic Gardens with an old friend who was looking for plant ideas for his garden). Went to dinner with the daughters of a cousin who pumped me for stories of their grandmother, who died when they were too little to remember her, and also for stories about their mom as a girl/young woman. Wink

Then I boarded the California Zephyr which took us over the Rockies, across Utah and Nevada, and then over the Sierra Nevada. Gorgeous scenery all the way (including a few full moons as we passed by rafters on the Colorado River, apparently a tradition.). I detrained at Sacramento and caught the Coast Starlight north. I very much enjoyed all the people I met & talked with on the train, including a young woman headed to a "plein air" painting retreat in Reno who had never been west before and loudly exclaimed her delight at seeing elk, red rocks, mountain streams, snow, and especially the snowstorm we went through going over the Rockies. Her joy was infectious and made the trip more fun for everyone. We did have to wait for winds to die down on the east slope of the Rockies, but I spent that time talking with a very nice young man; we got on so well, we met up a couple more times just to chat. (Another young man I met a little later told me that when we were stopped, he looked out on a pen full of goats who had a trampoline--said he could have watched them all day!) I met people from Germany, Iran, China, India, and Great Britain. And on the last leg, another old friend I hadn't seen in 10 years, so we had a good time catching up with each other.

Came home to many anxious emails from two clients, so I shall hit the ground running tomorrow, but fortunately I'm nice and relaxed. Even despite the morning I got stuck in the shower on the train for 20 minutes, due to a faulty lock ("oh yeah, that keeps happening" said the attendant who finally responded to the call button, and in fact someone got stuck in it later that same morning). Slept amazingly well; I don't think I woke up once during the night on the stretch through Utah & eastern Nevada. It rained here while I was gone and my garden is flourishing; even the dahlias I wasn't sure were going to accept being transferred have sent up shoots.

What a delightful journey! [In reply to] Can't Post

Feasting on the scenery, having the time to chat with people, and enjoying the excitement of a person new to these areas, is something that just cannot be done on a plane or car/bus ride. So many wonderful memories now!

Back to work - but a part of you will always be on that trip. Cool

Interesting! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll take it some of the gremlins were kicked out over the weekend, as we're at 4k guests now and the speed is quite good.

That's a good question re: bots, and I know it's a very hot topic in the concert world. It's definitely rampant, but I'm not sure to exactly what extent. I've heard some folks advocate for a "back to the physical box office" system where you have to purchase in-person, but I'm not sure how that stops someone from still going to the arena and purchasing tickets they intend to immediately resell. I personally would find it interesting if they attempted a "your credit card must match the ID presented at the venue" policy for the big events - I'm sure that's too difficult to implement, but at least you could tie the purchaser to the attendee more reliably...

Oh well, at least now I can say I saved some money and can put it towards something else. Laugh

To volunteer their boats and many even their lives for the rescue the troops of this battle is breath-taking. Can you imagine looking out from beaches to see a massive flotilla of "Little Ships" moving toward them like a surreal shadow covering the water? Fantastic!

I was also enthralled reading of the renovation of 2 surviving Little Ships.
