The massive Gandalf-on-an-eagle installation at Wellington Airport will fly the coop (be dismantled) at the end of the week.

ANYway...I was just at the Wellington airport yesterday and thought to myself as I walked under their magnificence, "How cool that we still have the Eagles and Gandalf! I do hope they'll be a forever feature."  Am I the jinx! I am, aren't I?! I'm the jinx. Sorry, folks.
There have been many photos with the eagles of every friend who has visited here. I'm scheduled for one more airport stop tomorrow, and I will spend some time with a coffee looking up and paying homage to the many talents over the many decades that made them possible.
Here's one photo from a stop in in Nov 2022. Gandalf had obviously been using that staff to conjure jelly fish - or magic mushrooms - or dragon gems.

I've been lucky enough to see them several times, and it's always been an added treat when flying into our cool little capital.
All things must pass, though. And it'll be interesting to see what replaces them - good to see Weta Workshop will be involved.

Oh man, Ataahua! I can't believe they're pulling them out! You can't imagine the scale of those HUGE, STATELY, INCREDIBLE Eagles! The detail of the feathers and all are indescribable! I see them as the size they are in the stories.
This is so, so sad... and I'm incredibly grateful I had a chance to see them in 2018 and walk under them... which is a dangerous thing to walk under a bird ;)
I also got to see the suspended Gollum and Smaug's head coming through the wall. Monstrous HUGE they were/are!
We have been there and back again.

This is so sad. I have to hang onto the belief they will be reunited and displayed in a Middle-earth museum that's been talked about for so long.
If anyone would like a great memento for this statue and moment... WETA has a great miniature of it. I got one when I visited WETA Workshop in 2018 and it's VERY well done! :D As of today, it's available with free shipping!
We have been there and back again.
