You had such a great spot, too, didn't you? I know they're a weed, but such a useful weed.

How close did the fires get to you? Is your Cali-home OK? I'm sorry to hear about the funeral. Was it a good gathering for the family?

I haven't heard that song in decades. Need to add it to my playlist. Why, yes, I did grow up in a rural area, how did you guess?

Long ago my dog attacked a skunk at night outside my bedroom window (open), so yes, I smelled like a skunk for a weekend as a teenager. I don't recommend anyone else try it. Showering definitely helps, but a whiff remained. Seems funny now. Otherwise, it's a weekend of snow and Superbowl. PS. Really enjoying the return of high-speed access to TORN!

Wheee, that was fun! Many thanks to Corvar for dealing with the board problem. All that stuff is so far beyond me, I'd need the Hubble space telescope to see it! I'm kind of glad we don't have skunks here, though they're visually very appealing. Worst thing I've had to deal with was the family dog before this one rolling in fox poo if he could find it. Urgh...that does linger! I feel sorry for those armadillos. Any animal whose response to threat is to freeze doesn't have much going for it in modern society. You can't stare down a truck, or roll into a ball like our hedgehogs... I loved the little gem of information about sugar maple syrup tasting like dish soap if taken too late in the season. A bit like nettles; the young tops are good in soups and stews early on, but let them grow too much and they're coarse and bitter - not worth having. I've seen ads for the Superbowl on tv here, so I'm sure there are UK fans looking forward to it, but it's not something that's ever drawn me in. I might cast an eye over the exploits of Liverpool FC, to keep up with the grandsons, but that's about it. The wind's coming out of the east this weekend so it's cold and dry - and grey. ~bleah~ . Still - no ice, which is a definite plus! Lots of little green noses are poking up in the garden, there will be plenty of daffodils soon. Snowdrops and primroses are already out. On Wednesday I'm going to an event called 'Battle of the Bands' at their school. Older grandson (14) and a couple of friends have been practising their heavy metal numbers enthusiastically. There's a place not far away where they can rent rehearsal space, so the neighbours haven't been too traumatised! They've called their band 'Animosity'. They say they're not in it to win, but to be memorable - which makes me rather nervous! My ears will probably still be ringing by next Fiesta. He came to visit me a few nights ago, wearing a sweater that looked like it had gone three rounds with a werewolf. The younger (12) grandson's guitar skills are improving, so he might enter the Battle when he reaches that age. Enjoy your weekends, however you spend them - cheers, folks!

OMG! It's got to be 35 years since I heard this! Yet... so nostalgic and memorable... I was singing along with the chorus straight away! So sad how the roads get populated, but so true... THANK YOU! And I didn't know about the sappy stuff. It adds to the joy-joy of the tradition. And I just saw they're already hanging 2-4 buckets on over 2,000 trees in town and in the surrounding woods! These townies move fast :) Thanks again!

When my younger daughter was about 2, we lived in University townhouse-type housing (very military type). Eight buildings with 4 units in each all forming a square facing each other with a playground and large yard in the center. We were outside talking to some neighbours at dusk when my little one walks away saying, "Kitty, kitty, kitty..." arms reaching out. YEP!! It was a skunk waddling around in that yard where 30+ kids play!

I sing that song every time I'm out driving and encounter that smell. I was at my cousins' on the east side of the state last fall, and there was one right on the road that we had to take into town - we rolled up windows and held our breath but that is one permeating stink fersher.

Yes, hoping you weren't too close to the fires! And sad to hear of having to head home for a funeral, is the family doing okay? I thought the Super Bowl was all about the ads. Don't they play some kind of game in between them?

I'd heard that one could actually eat those - so that's the key, they've got to be picked ASAP. Your daffs are coming up? You've got Springtime! Hm, do you have any earplugs to wear to that Battle of the Bands, or if you have hearing aids, just quietly turn them off...I'm not a fan of loud bands, no matter what kind of music they play. Glad to know they've got a separate rehearsal space. Let us know whether they live up to that name!

and just take the top sprig. Cooking neutralises the sting. They're more nutritious than spinach - good thing Popeye didn't eat them though! (I'm strong as metal 'cos I eat my nettles)? Not a safe message to send to the kids... I'm fortunate not to need hearing aids, but I think some sort of earplugs would be a good idea!
