Invigorating [In reply to] Can't Post

is the word I like to use. I live on a lake in Maine, and in the summer I like to start my day by jumping in. It wakes you up better than any cup of coffee.

Apparently, cold-water swimming is also good for mental and physical health. A friend here swims in the ocean year-round as part of her mental health management.

Aha - I thought it was just me! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was out last night and tried to post on my return, but it was taking too long and I was tired. I'd been to a photography talk entitled 'Glass,Concrete and Steel', all about looking differently at urban architecture - out of my comfort zone but very interesting. My broadband can be a bit dodgy too, which doesn't help. Anyway, I made it finally! Stay warm, you folks in the path of the polar blast; we're back into positve single figures (Celsius!) now, with frosty nights - positively balmy in comparison. I have home-made chicken and veg soup on the go; the next batch will be carrot and lentil. That, with some crusty bread, is just the ticket for cold weather.
Want to sail away from it all? Try this...a nice foot-tapping song, enjoy!

Maine lakes are so pristine. Do you have many loons? (My in-laws loved watching them, trying to guess where they'd surface after a dive.)

Hot soups for cold weather. [In reply to] Can't Post

A lovely thing about soups is that they're a great way to use any leftover veggies. Do you put in rice, or noodles, or couscous?

Urban architecture can be very surprising! I once read a children's book which found all the letters of the alphabet in urban structures.

*taps toes* Hmm...got your bags packed for a voyage to the warmer climes? Wink

Winter is here! [In reply to] Can't Post

snowy pen and cuddly beanbag with heating pad underneath

Sunday is when the minus temps move in. I've prepped for several days of shiver-me-timbers cold from power outages (4 days in one of them) with extra wood for the fireplace and blankets, etc.; thermoses of hot water, oil lamps, flashlights, batteries, candles, etc.; propane tanks for small generator; filled tank for hobbity, insulating plastic/styrofoam sheets on the doors/windows, etc.

I'm mostly concerned for my pup, Pickle, who is now 9yo. I put straw down on the ground where he can do his duty quickly. Being a Chihuahua mix, he's got no extra fur and he will not keep on the booties and barely tolerates his thermal coat. In the last frigid storm, he got disoriented out in the yard in just a couple of minutes and couldn't move. I had to scoop him up and get him inside where it took several minutes to help him recover. So I go with him if he needs to go, and I'll block his doggie door so he can get out if I'm not here.

We love our loons. [In reply to] Can't Post

And we have a strong organization called Lakes Environmental Association that works hard to keep the lake pristine. Milfoil is the biggest threat these days. It takes a lot of effort to keep those invasive species out.

Our local community theater put on a production of On Golden Pond last summer. Every performance was sold out. We know how special this place is, and that play is all about us.

I took this pic a few years ago:

He can't be that old now! [In reply to] Can't Post

It feels like it was just a couple years ago he joined your family! That thin coat really doesn't help in the frigid temps, the poor pup. If only he could learn to use a litter-box - but I don't know of any dog that can do that!

You are certainly well-prepared, gramma, and it's a relief knowing you have that fireplace! Do you have a gas stove? (Ours is electric, but we have a propane-fueled camp stove we can use on our porch.)

One thing useful about the cold temps - just put all the refrigerated foods outside!

Stay warm!!!

I've never put couscous in soup - [In reply to] Can't Post

might give that a try! I usually have it with salad. Sometimes I use rice or noodles in soup but my standard 'orange soup' (the colour, not the fruit!) consists of onion, carrots, potato, red lentils, sometimes sweet potato, all chopped up small; a tin of tomatoes, chilli flakes and a couple of vegetable stock cubes to season. I just have to be careful the lentils don't get stuck to the bottom of the pan.
No warmer climes for me this year, after what I had to spend on the house last year! I'll just have to hope we have a good summer. I live close to the sea, so the beach is handy if we do.
I think a city day out with my camera is called for; it'd make a change!

Wow! A week of.... "What the......?" [In reply to] Can't Post

OH HORROR on the flood from upstairs! I'm glad you were home to catch what you could (quick thinking on the bin)... but yeah, this is not going to be nice with the repairs and disruption! I'm so sorry!

Isn't it amazing that you'd have that connection out of the blue from your past!?! And isn't it amazing how the time passing doesn't hinder the emotions of truth and closure? My ex and I have had that for about 10 years now... and it is very healing. It's also fun to talk with someone who is part of your life that "gets" what you're talking about! I'm really happy for you there... for both of you. *raises mug* Here's to peace and smiles. :)

I know, right? [In reply to] Can't Post

They said at the pound that he was about 2 1/2 yo when I adopted him summer 2018. He just doesn't show any aging or slowing down... except for the 2 times in the past couple of years that he has hip problems and can't jump onto my lap ;)

I have an electric stove, but I do have a propane grill outside (moved into garage) and I have an iron hook that swings over the fire in the fireplace for cooking.

Actually. I have just moved most of the stuff from my freezer into coolers in the garage so I can purge old stuff and defrost/clean the thing :)

Yummy on the soups! [In reply to] Can't Post

Soup in the winter with crusty bread or a sandwich is always so comforting :D These sound great!

I'm glad the class is challenging you even if you don't embrace all of it. You never know what's going to tweak your curiosity :D But, yeah, on the taking a long time to post. Hopefully that will all be resolved once we get the upgrade on the new(again) Boards.

I hope you have a fabulous weekend! :D

Yep, you're all set for fireplace soup, or stew, or just hot water for a warm cuppa tea!

Oh, excellent idea, take advantage of the cold outside to give the freezer a good cleaning! What's the oldest thing you've ever discovered in there, packed into a far corner?

looks like the people behind the scenes have worked some magic - yay! Either that or teh wind was in the right direction... My favourite roll to have with soup is something from the local supermarket called a cheese twist; white and crunchy with a cheesy tang, delicious with a little butter.

I'm on Long Lake, just to the north, which connects to Sebago through Brandy Pond and the Songo River. With a motorboat, it's an afternoon trip from one to the other.

Lake-Effect Snow [In reply to] Can't Post

Ah, the joys of living in the Buffalo, NY area. I tried to drive into work a little while ago and had to give up. We are currently experiencing lake-effect snow and the streets in my co-op have not been plowed at all yet. They are all but impassible and are effectively all single-lane roads for now. The snow isn't particularly heavy, nor is there any wind worth noting, but the snow is steady and builds up quickly. When the snow plow does come through, we can expect our driveway to be blocked again.

The lake-effect event isn't expected to subside until 4 a.m. Wednesday morning. What fun!

Lake-Effect Dud? [In reply to] Can't Post

Good one! But, despite record low temperatures, the storm hasn't been as bad as it might have been. There hasn't been any significant wind, so no drifting. And the snow bands have moved away from us for some pretty long periods. If the streets in our co-op had actually been plowed in time, I could have made it to work last night with no real problem. I will have some more shoveling to do tomorrow though!
