Fingers-crossed for good news!

slumped in front of' 'Monty Don's Great British Gardens' on tv - and forgot Fiesta, lost in a dream of summer! We've been having what counts here for a very cold snap, though it's pretty tame in the grand scheme of things. Snow and ice make things treacherous for driving or walking and the early morning routine of topping up bird food and de-icing the bird baths in the garden is bracing, to say the least! We've had sun, which helps with passive solar gain in the house but doesn't help a lot outside. Still, the horrors of the LA fires and the Tibet earthquake - not to mention everything else going on in the world! - make it all seem insignificant. I count my blessings daily. Thanks for the update on TORnsibs in the area; the thought of having to get out at such short notice is terrifying. Here, we're not in the mindset of having a 'go bag' ready; closest I got to that was during the lockdowns, when I was scared of catching Covid and had a 'hospital bag' packed, just in case. What I should have handy (but well hidden of course) is a little book with all my passwords in it; I have a different one for every online place I visit! Have the best weekend you can, folks - cheers!

We try, but if the temps are staying well below freezing for the day, it's a lost cause! I had a bag packed to go a few years ago when my Dad was starting to ail and I never knew if I might get a call at work to take the 1 1/2 hour trip to his house for an emergency. The emergency agencies around here at least annually warn folks that they should always have an emergency bag, or list, ready at all times - especially during hurricane season. Definitely agree about the password book - or multi-page printout in my case! There's a copy located in three different places, known only to my son and me. You might want to consider making a copy of your book, sealing it in an envelope, and giving it to whoever you've given your "pertinent instructions" to. Stay warm!

I think a day like you just had is among the best. You're not being run by a schedule and you can take all the time you want to wander, investigate, and enjoy where you are. *high five* :) Oh... I think where you live is incredible for its beauty and merciful climate! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

I'm glad you were able to rest like that. With so much going on, it's hard to turn off our brains sometimes (Though mine constantly sputters and putts all the time now ;) I still do that same thing of having a bag ready. Especially with family all over the place and so much going on. I always have a bag in the truck (especially during the winter), with wool blankets/small bean-bag pillow, hand warmers, hats/gloves/scarves, warm boots/socks, flashlight/candles/matches, portable foodstuff, water (warmer weather), cat litter/snow shovel, etc. If I get stuck on the road or on a long-distance drive, I don't want to worry about what I might need and not have. Even close to home, I have 4 miles of back roads with only a few houses along the way. When I dropped off my g'son from an appt last week, a teenage boy was on the ground in the driveway having a seizure. There were a few people standing there who called for help, but it was wet & snowy and he was clearly hurt. That small pillow & wool blanket came in handy till help came and someone fetched his mom. Stay safe and warm, m'dear! I love the tactic you just had :D

They have separate, glass-walled-off rooms for YA and children's books, labeled "Teen Room" and "Kid's Room." Which I found actually a bit daunting, because I do read a lot of YA books, but I felt a little bit like a trespasser. However, I can see that the teens especially would appreciate having their own area. There are also small rooms with a desk in you can reserve, and I saw quite a few folks, mostly college age, working away in them. Took me a while to find the adult fiction section which was hidden away behind nonfiction. And I had to ask where History was because there didn't seem to be any guides like they had posted on the ends of the stacks in the old library, and I do NOT remember my Dewey Decimal system. Although I could have just looked it up on my phone I suppose, maybe that's what everyone does these days. They didn't have Unruly in stock--a very tongue-in-cheek history of the British royals that Ataahua recommended in the last reading thread--but said they would buy it if I requested it, so I did! It has a parking garage, good to know for when there's a big do downtown as parking can be at a premium at such times.

One would expect any library to be explanatory that way. But I like the glass-walled rooms, and working cubicles are a must. And good on them, for their policy of purchasing a book requested! A parking garage? Perfect! No fretting about carrying checked-out books to one's car in the rain!

Thank you for the reminder, that's highly recommended for traction on ice should a car get stuck. You have an excellent assortment of car supplies! To the rescue with the blanket and pillow, that was the best thing you could have done while waiting for help!

well, worthy of a margarita! Thank goodness for your brother - and for the very kind nurse. And for medical relaxants :) Not a great way to spend a chunk of your holiday, though. Hoping you get good results, and get them promptly. My rockmelons are flowering (and I saw a bumblebee hard at work pollinating earlier), but aren't nearly as flourishing as this time last year, so we shall see. Absolutely fresh rockmelons, as I found last summer, are just stunningly nice. I've planted beetroot in between the tomatoes, and they seem to enjoy the light shade. When we do get sun (iffy this summer) it's a bit too fierce for them.

but I have been known to go out three times a day to de-ice. Doesn't happen often, thankfully! This cold snap is fading now. Good idea to have more than one copy of the passwords - and to make sure my daughter knows where they are!

Your challenges are on a different scale to ours, I think. I'm only a hundred yards or so from a road that is gritted and is a bus route. However, it doesn't hurt to be prepared! Your supplies came in very useful for that poor boy. You've reminded me to put a new flashlight on my shopping list, actually!. There are always a couple of blankets in the car,and a waterproof picnic rug - though that is rather 'doggy'!
