When so many years go by, it's not surprising how much we take some things for granted. You were very intuitive and wise to realize last year may be the last one with this gathering at home as her ability to take care of herself was fading. I remember how much it meant to her and I was glad that she was well enough to really enjoy it :) Quiet, simple gatherings are very ok, too :) Gives you a chance to play some board games or start a puzzle. Then there's the shopping!!!!! :D

So that mushroom cooking tip will definitely be making the rounds! What kind of mushrooms to you like the most for this? What a Merry Gathering you fell into :D I'll bet it spilled out into every room. How I love the turkey hands with gratitudes. It sounds so wonderful. She really kept the spirit of the day high and dry. How in the world did she keep track of everyone!? Then there's the shopping spree! TALLY HO! I hope you have a great rest of your weekend :D

I ALWAYS avoided the "staff parties" whenever I could in the last few years there. We used to have a lot of easy "hanging out" time with fellow workers from other areas. Then, the gatherings became opportunities to "address" the troops and make speeches. The place used to be more cordial. *sigh* I haven't been back to my old job site since I left April 2016. I miss my friends who have all left one-by-one. I hope your games are going great! Oh... a black pup! Would you name her Friday? I mean, you love the All Blacks and it was a Black Friday shopping time when you saw her ;) Well done on getting the Christmas shopping AND wrapping done! Wow! 90% of mine is done and most of those packages are due to be mailed out during the week. I hope you have a GREAT weekend!!!

To me, that is the height of elegance for a meal! I'm so glad you had a delightful meal and day together! What did the little kitty think of all the food - did she get any turkey bits?

but I imagine you could use just about any mushroom. I used to go mushrooming with a friend and I still remember the feast of oyster mushrooms cooked in butter . . . I'll tell you, the little girls of this particular friend group make me feel hope for the future. Another family, who didn't join us this time, have a 10-year-old and a 14-year-old who make sure everyone knows/obeys the rules at the annual Fourth of July kickball game, while also being the stars of their teams and doing cartwheels into home because they've go SOOOO much energy. They remind me of my niece-in-law, whom I first met when she was 17 & newly dating my nephew; at the time I said "I would not get between that lady and anything she's going after." She's now a law professor, a musician with a successful musical, and a mom to three boys, oh and she quilts and paints and does photography too. And I realized one day that the answer to the question "how does she do all that?" is "no one ever told her she couldn't."

I can't have another dog after losing my Jenny, who was the bestest girl ever. I did two fosters and . . . nope. So now I have a cat who is the neediest critter I've ever had. He yowls when he wakes up and I'm not in the same room with him, as if he's been abandoned forever. When I leave he greets me at the door on my return with his list of complaints. He would really like to sleep draped across my neck, but I draw the line at that; instead he curls up against me and complains loudly every time I move even slightly. Everyone who's ever been on a Zoom call with me has met him.

when anyone says that cats are snobs. They pick their people, and love spending time with them - sometimes, *all* their time! When I was a kid, Shannon would try to follow me when I went exploring in the bush area behind my home (I always urged her to go back, worried she'd get hurt). A vet once told me that cats lock onto either a home (they're the ones who wander back to their previous home when their family relocates) or a person, and Shannon was definitely the latter. I guess you and I were lucky to have such lovely pets in our lives, for a time.

were taken from beneath umbrellas, inside cars, through cafe windows etc! There were a lot of semi-abstract dribbly effects, some of which were rather pleasing. The judge talked us through all of the images submitted and her comments were very interesting and informative, dealing with composition, cropping, colour balance, avoiding distracting elements and so forth. Today, the last of November, I've put up two of my outside sets of fairy lights; three more to go up tomorrow, and an artificial tree in the porch, then I'll have a rest before I tackle inside decorations.the clock is ticking...! I'll be ready for a beer after sorting out that lot - cheers, folks!

By coincidence, we also had the bestest cats in the world, in our case for 18 years, and though I miss the presence of cats in our lives... well, memories will do. They also visit one or other of us in dreams from time to time, which is a special gift. There's a piece on one of "The History of Middle-earth" volumes where Tolkien speaks of Elvish child-rearing. I can't bring the exact quote to mind, but it's to do with the fact that Elvish women are physically capable of bearing children all their long lives, but choose to have them (generally) early and then no more. He refers to "the time of the children", which the Elves look back on fondly, but with no wish to re-create. Back when the loss of our boys was rawer than it is now, I found that thought quite comforting. I often recall "the time of the cats", precious in memory.

Who would escort me to the bus stop a block away every morning, and sit and watch until I got on the bus. I grew up in a "we like big dogs, not little dogs and definitely not cats" household. So I never lived with a cat until college. I was amazed to find out how cool they are. And I've even met some great small dogs . . . Jenny visits me in dreams as well. I made a photo album after she died and I still enjoy looking through it and remembering life with her. I do find as I age that memories can often be enough: I don't need to keep doing those things. Which is good because I probably couldn't do some of them anymore. . .

Just the perfect amount of scenery and getting a feel for the trip by train. I imagine it was really worth it for writing the associated parts of your book. Drizzly and cool, then hot and humid. Just the perfect weather for those veggies - not so much for the gardener. Wise to keep another layer or two handy. Have a great week, Kimi!

You made (and ate) all of that?! I'm so impressed. It was all I could do to get the two things done that I took. Being a southern girl, my sister-in-law puts candied pecans on top of her sweet potato casserole, but I love it with marshmallows too. Now I'm thinking it would be stellar with both! Sounds like a wonderful day.

Really quite inspirational, and lots of fun. Yes, a rich and heavy fruit cake, helped along by a dollop of brandy :) An old family recipe, and an annual treat for us.

And yes, a great help for getting a proper "feel" for the journey. I naively wondered if there'd be enough interest, but in the end there were seven carriages, all full. Lots of train love!
