awesome to think that those marks I photographed have been there since the 1590s! [The Ancient High House is one of the finest Tudor buildings in the country. Once dominating the skyline of Stafford, it is the largest remaining timber framed town house in England. Royalty was welcomed to the house in 1642 when King Charles I stayed there en route to Shrewsbury, and the house retains an extensive collection of period furniture and architectural features. It is also the home of the Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum. Built in around 1595 for the wealthy Dorrington family, the ornate timber framed building is reputed to be the largest surviving timber framed town house in England from the Tudor period.]

Wow. Just the work that went into all of the windows is incredible.

What a gorgeous building - and, I expect, a pain in the butt to maintain.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. It's impressive inside too, with some remnants of decorative Tudor wall paintings still in place. It has higgledy-piggledy stairs, broad uneven creaking oak floor boards - the place is full of atmosphere. When I visited there was an embroidery group meeting in one of the upstairs rooms; they'd embroidered in chainstitch a whole set of replica bed covers for the four poster bed - a huge amount of work. It's amazing what you can do, just using chain stitch!

I think those diamond-paned windows developed because large windows showed off the fact that you were rich, but making glass in large sheets was expensive and difficult so they used lots of little pieces stuck together. Presumably lead was easier to come by!

Chain stitch itself is easy, but getting the spacing even can be a pain!
