Whither, Eorlingas? (Next character discussion possibilities)

Sorry to everybody for being AWOL! I will try to go back and weigh in on some things, and especially NoWiz's excellent orc posts. But looking to the future, I went back (yes, I know. back to the . . .) and checked on our original poll, and thought perhaps we could choose from the 2-vote characters, or even the 1-votes. Oddly, having finished the 5-vote characters, I noticed there are no 4 or 3 votes for anyone. I may run a new poll at some point. But on the meantime, who's next? Two votes in the Pollantir: Merry Witch King Wormtongue One votes: Sam Elrond Gaffer Gamgee Gandalf Legolas Gimli Frodo

i would go with Merry and go with how he's grown in the Quest, looking at him as a Brandybuck to what he had to deal with during Quest and also post-Quest how he has become a leader among hobbits. We can also do a more in depth comparison of him with the other hobbits and also him with other non hobbit characters like Faramir, Eowyn, Gandalf, Aragorn, Theoden etc.
"By Elbereth and Luthien the fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!" ~Frodo "And then Gandalf arose and bid all men rise, and they rose, and he said: 'Here is a last hail ere the feast endeth. Last but not least. For I name now those who shall not be forgotten and without whose valour nought else that was done would have availed; and I name before you all Frodo of the Shire and Samwise his servant. And the bards and the minstrels should give them new names: Bronwe athan Harthad and Harthad Uluithiad , Endurance beyond Hope and Hope Unquenchable.." ~Gandalf, The End of the Third Age , from The History of Middle Earth series "He knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings."- Siege of Gondor, RotK

I love that idea. As well as being an intriguing character, he's got a lot of connections.

I could help with "Wormtongue"

He's an interesting character - Tolkien writes a good psycologically manipulative villian - but probably won't take us all that long. I'd imagine one discussion, or at most two (perhaps if there are two the division could be "Wormtongue at Edoras" and "Wormtongue with Saruman" But I think it might be better to do him all at once). I don't think I can currently agree a deadline for doing an OP. So if another forum member wants to do it soon and for sure, then I think they should say so, and go ahead. But if chapter-leaders are hard to find, maybe we can discuss something/someone else first and then I can let you know whether I am making any progress?

And thanks for being wiling to lead it. I'm thinking maybe start with Merry first? There may be more to cover with him. Hopefully some others will chyme in soon, to get an idea of what folks would like.

I've been AWOL too and still need to reply to Wiz's excellent musings on orcs and evil. But anyway, I think we could sink our literary teeth into Merry in a good way and have an enlightening discussion.
