It's a fascinating article that explains and embraces the purpose (and burdens) of this 100-year reflection of "official place naming in New Zealand, its offshore islands, Antarctica and on the sea floor." For fans of Tolkien, the films, and New Zealand... we're enthusiastic about references to all of that be included. But first and foremost is the honour and heritage of the people and places belonging to NZ... their home. This really is a great read that has given me a greater respect for NZ and what it has given us :) Thank you, Moahunter.

I have yet to see the limestone arch named Moria Gate, though, despite two visits to the basin (mobility issues, unfortunately). Kimi might have though, as we coincidentally visited the basin with days of each other last summer.

A nice walk, for if you do ever make it back there. I think I'll wait and see if they manage to improve the road first, though :) The biggest highlight of the area was the moa cave, which I know you did explore.

I was shocked to see how much the road into Karamea had deteriorated

since I last visited 15(ish) years ago - all of these slips are reasonably recent. The hotelier said that Karamea was cut off after a big storm a while ago and it took weeks to get the access that you and I carefully manoeuvred our cars around. Funnily enough, the (sometimes freaky) gravel road into the basin was better than it had been during my first trip!

The gravel road was *worse* back then?

Gosh. It's possibly the worst public road I've been on in this country. It's a good thing the sights at the end of it are so worthwhile. I wonder how the road into Karamea has fared since, with all the storms we've had in the last couple of years. It's a lovely area, but not exactly easy to get to.
