"First look" at War of the Rohirrim (screengrabs) Can't Post

People magazine has published three images from War of the Rohirrim (accompanying an article about Brian Cox, the voice of Helm), giving us a sense of what the finished film's art style will look like. There's a blog post (which I haven't read) on the main TORn site analysing all three.

The first-look images show Cox's character Helm Hammerhand sitting alongside members of his family, including the newly introduced characters Héra (Gaia Wise), Haleth and Hama. Another up-close image of Héra shows her holding a sword.

A synopsis for the movie reads that Helm's daughter Héra "must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction" as Rohan's situation grows more perilous. "I have to say, [Cox] being the father of a daughter also was really interesting given the dynamic at the heart of this film," Boyens adds of the Succession alum's performance. "That was really great."

Helm's daughter is unnamed in canon and there's no mention of her playing an active role in events, but I'm happy to see her role beefed up. I'm pleased with the art style, too: more or less what I expected in light of Kenji Kamiyama's previous work. I think it could be a good fit for Middle-earth and I'm pleasantly surprised to find myself genuinely looking forward to this, though I'm still keeping my expectations in check. :P

I don't know about anyone else, [In reply to] Can't Post

but while it's different to see Middle-earth in this format, it looks beautiful, and I can not wait to see that in theaters. The detail of the Throne in the Golden Hall matches the way it looked when Theoden sat in it. So they are definitely keeping the continuity there between this film and Jackson's six films.
I'm very excited, and am excited to see Middle-earth again on the big screen since the last time I saw one in theaters when BotFA came out as I didn't have a change to rewatch the LOTR remastered during their run this past couple of weeks.

"Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed."

I agree about the visual continuity between films. [In reply to] Can't Post

Not only is it a lovely connection to the visual storytelling for fans of PJ's movies, but it'll make it easier for the audience to connect this unknown story to the Middle-earth cultures they already know.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM – ANIME EXPO EXCLUSIVE [In reply to] Can't Post

Published by: Anime Expo

Quote
Under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, New Line Cinema’s original anime feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” returns audiences to the epic world brought to life in “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, based on the revered books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Though not the first time the Tolkien world has been animated, this is the first time it has been rendered in beautiful anime style. It is also the first story from the Tolkien realm with a heroine leading the charge.

Kamiyama says, “In Japanese animation, it’s not uncommon for a female protagonist to be the main character, but it’s more rare in the live-action films made from The Lord of the Rings. Our film has a strong female lead in Héra, and our story is narrated by the noble Tolkien figure Éowyn, so women are very well represented. I think there are a lot of fans who really like Tolkien’s original work, so I hope those people will enjoy it. Making this movie has been a fun challenge.”

I tried to reduce the image size but it wasn't working.
