Here comes my obligatory obnoxious response encouraging nuance:
EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF ART that's ever been made in the history of the world has had "an agenda" (in the worst cases a soulless, corporate, monetary one and in the best cases a deeply personal or artistic one - these agendas are often invisible or unimportant to audiences)
I think maybe what you meant was, "THE agenda." (The one where Diversity, Inclusivity and Representation take precedence over almost all other areas in the creative arena)
Ok, my response has been even more pedantic than I had budgeted for, but I think this kind of nuance is important.

But to parry with equal pedanticity, I think you mean DIE: Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. Or DEI: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Depending on one's agenda. Representation can be folded into all of those.

I always forget about equity.
In the last few months since we've started batting these issues back and forth I've really learned a lot and I think I've come much closer to your argued positions.
I still disagree with the idea that The Agenda was THE main (or even A main) engine behind ROP's casting or writing or production - beyond maybe it's marketing - and I still don't see any evidence that Amazon threw their fans under the bus - but I do agree that the current cultural DEI fixation is strangling the life out of art.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I treasure our occasional back-and-forths on these boards. I've even name dropped you in real life with close friends or family. Some ROP news will drop and I'll say, "Hmmm... I wonder what DGHCaretaker is going to make of this..." and then I usually get blasted for being a dork who argues about Tolkien on the internet.

On this side of the Internet, the only places this is coming up for me is in the most unlikely and irrelevant of topics, for example, in a thread about a video about Wes Anderson and LOTR. The only people I see fixated upon DEI are those upset about it. It seems to have a way of making some folks strangely obsessive and neurotic.

My whole life is in education. There's no escaping the "fixation" on DEI in that arena. I don't think it's fair to make this sound like some kind of internet comments section problem. It's a legitimate ideological shift in western society for better or worse. It's also extremely polarizing - again, for better or for worse.
It's an elephant in every room.

The only objections to DEI I am aware of is when an ideological agenda usurps existing story instead of creating something new and organic, then represents all criticism for doing so as part of an extremist point of view of a few. Worse, when the whole cycle is used as an intentional, cynical marketing device that puts its talent on the front lines of its own manufactured hostility.

And for me - as someone who actually agrees with the ideology - I think DEI becomes problematic as soon as it's given paramount importance in all things. I think Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are all important and meaningful aims. I just don't think they're the MOST important. That's my problem with the cultural shift. They've triaged DEI to the top and it does not belong on top no matter what arena, or social situation you're in.
