Thanksgiving binge ROP!! Can't Post

So, my sister and I would watch every Friday night this fall and text...and decided we would binge watch this past weekend...in and around family gatherings...we did two or three episodes at time and saved the final episode for our last day...so technically not a binge, but enough to keep us glued in and talking!

Wow! We acknowledged some critiques and similarities to PJ while viewing, but we loved it and both oohed and aahed over the same things, catching little acting moves or cinematography! Weepy at Arondir blessing the tree, Galadriel riding a horse, and Poppy singing what should be a standard pub tune everywhere! Battles, scary orcs, Adar, Halbrand and Starman revealed...Theo! Bronwyn! Durin, Disa, and Elrond, oh my!!! Sadoc and all the Harfoots...weepy at Nori saying goodbye...

Scary Sauron ladies...

The wizard only learns to speak in the end...and is quoting Gandalf...

Earendil...Isildur ....so many great story lines were developed that will now grow...

Miriel and Pharazon...can’t wait for their plot lines....

Loving the look of Numenor and ships...future plan of Minas Tirith...

I could go on and am leaving actors/ places out...all the trees in the show are pure Tolkien!! Old and wise...did we see an Entwife with a baby when the comet flew overhead???

Ultimately, second time is a charm...just like when I watched each PJ movie multiple times in theaters....yes I had my critiques but on repeated viewings I loved them more as I caught more subtle things in each scene...

We both say thumbs up after letting go of preconceptions! We were on the edge of our seats for so many scenes!

Especially for the huge Halbrand reveal, I'm sure.

We watched Andor. Much better. No trace of agenda - just plenty of diversity without making a virtuous point of it and twelve episodes of a good, fun story. It was the best of all the recent Star Wars productions. The others, including Obi Wan, have been do disappointing that this was the biggest refresher since Luke in The Mandalorian.

Agreed! [In reply to] Can't Post

Loved it way more on the rewatch. I too struggle to see the show that is and not the show I want it to be - especially on the first viewing. I actually really enjoyed a lot more of the writing and acting the second time around. Definitely excited to see what happens with season 2 and beyond!

Rewatch is definitely rewarding [In reply to] Can't Post

I particularly enjoyed nuances in the interactions of Gil-galad, Elrond and Durin, and Arondir's story. My perception of Gil-Galad changed a lot.

Heh, no, did not. My "We watched..." subject line was a tease leading into "We watched Andor..." ;) How's that for a twist? "Especially for the huge Halbrand reveal, I'm sure." was 100% pure sarcasm.

Whoops! [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry to hear that. How do you know Andor was "better" then? Seems like an odd choice of words.

(Not that I advocate this kind of stuff - but I've seen ROP streaming online in other places then the official amazon channel - could be worth looking for in your case...)

I'm glad to hear you liked it [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm happy to hear there are people who like this show. But I guess I'm hanging around wrong crowds, because the sentiment of everyone I've talked to is pretty unanimous.

Not to kick the bees' nest, but would you really describe the entirety of the show with words of such positivity and enthusiasm? Was there nothing that bothered you? For me, even with the shows I like best, there's always bound to be something that I think could be improved. If I didn't, I'd think myself too blindly invested in them to be rational.

Jumping in [In reply to] Can't Post

This question is not for me but I'll jump in and say, yes! I loved it.

I don't mean I have no criticisms. I do. But overall I thought it was great.

Most of my criticisms are super inside baseball Tolkien stuff too. From a general audience perspective I thought it was terrific.

I've seen and read lots of criticisms - some of which I wholeheartedly agree with. But a lot of the criticism seems disproportionate for what the show actually was. No need to rehash that all here, as you say, but yeah. I thought it was great.

By osmosis. I have not spared myself from exposure to articles, PR, trailers, criticism, spoilers, worldwide discussions, and proactive research so I could at least know what I was writing about.

I respect property rights, so I don't sail on those high seas. They can have their profit - just not from me until the agenda is gone, fans are not blamed or baited, and it's all just for fun. I remember a radio ad for the original Star Wars release in 1977, before it was "The New Hope," and the narrator says, "Never has so much money been spent just for fun." Like that. (FYI - the movie cost somewhere between $9m and $11m. Heh.)

So where in Rings of Power, which you haven't watched, does it do that. It's probably best to reserve your judgement on something you haven't seen no? I haven't seen Andor but looking forward to it, and wouldn't be so bold as to form any opinion on it yet.

My comments are not myopically focused on the fiction. Read all my past criticisms if you'd truly like to understand, but I don't expect or anticipate it.

This is baffling. [In reply to] Can't Post

You haven't seen the show, yet you continue to post about it, even in threads where people who have seen the show are excited about it and talking about what they love. What is your motivation in constantly inserting yourself in the middle of conversations about the show, when you admittedly have not seen it?

I simply don't understand that mindset. There are many of us who enjoyed season one of "The Rings of Power". Is there nowhere in the online world where we can post about it and not be sidetracked by those who either hated it or those who never saw it yet still hated it?

The Bee’s Knees lol [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok to kick that bee nest, I will give you two moments where I slapped my forehead...and they are not about made up characters, which I have grown to love.
1: Celeborn is dead????? Wtf....then there will be no daughter Celebrian who marries Elrond therefore no daughter Arwen who marries Aragorn....talk about messing with lore!! But Galadriel says Celeborn went to war and she never saw him again so I think this is another ruse, a MacGuffin if you will...there will be a meeting, a reunion...Celeborn Lives!
2: mithril, the trees, it being necessary to the health of elves.....I don’t know why they intertwined these but I guess it was to cement the connection between elves and dwarves beyond just the friendship of Durin and Elrond. But they almost lost me on that one!
So there it is...I do have my critiques just as I had with PJ and no Glorfindal or Bombadil and not enough Faramir development....
But I can’t wait for all of ROP!! After repeated viewings I am onboard....
