Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! January 5

Greetings Fellow Walkers!! HEY!!! In case you haven't noticed.... it's 2023!! BOOM!
Lots and lots of people see this audacious flipping from one year to the next as a springboard to resolutions, travel promises, cleaning the basement (points at self), etc. I'm punishing myself AGAIN with a vow to lose 5 pounds... then 5 more... then... you get the picture ;) Thankfully I'm in very good health as a 70yo gammer, so it's really just a matter of discipline *kaff* Have you been inspired to set any goals for the year? How about getting up and moving around a bit ;) Or a lot? Remember, if you mix up the way you get activity, it keeps it from being such a bother and a nuisance. I know that's part of my game plan. So do share your plan and then check in every few months and let us know how you're doing. Your cheering section is right here! Remember, we still have some friends scrambling through Middle-earth. Frodo, Sam, Gollum and I have FINALLY left the nasty, cracky, stacky mountains and have moved on to the exotic retreat of the Dead Marshes while, at the same time, the Battle of Helm's Deep rages in Rohan. Hmmmm... where would I rather be? *shudder* Hang in there, and all my best wishes and blessings for peace of mind, great health, success and prosperity to you all throughout this shiny-New Year! See you on the Road!

Greetings Fellow Walkers! So... are you used to writing 2023 yet? The first few months of a New Year are impossible for me. I'm still writing 1984! *shakes head* It wasn't even that good of a year! Anyway... how are you coming along on your Quest? I hope all is well in your neck of the woods as nearly the entire U.S. west coast... and beyond... has nearly been washed away! HANG ON CALI! My Quest... clean the house! *upchuck* Seriously, in several rooms... I'd feel right at home in Bilbo's Bag End! Trying to keep too much plus storing (still) my adult kids' "stuff" is now even enough for me!! So I'm into it deeply and clearing things out! It's a worthy workout; but such a pain in the... neck. It'll be so gratifying when I'm done and I'll wear it as a personal badge of honour and lifetime achievement! Sort of... ;) So how are you doing? I hope you're having inspiration to keep going and encouragement by your progress as you carry on! *high five* Keep Going! Meanwhile, back in Middle-earth... Frodo, Sam, Gollum and I have just passed through the slag heaps of the Morannon. Oh geez! Later, as we tried to rest and recover, Sam overheard a Gollum/Smeagol debate while crouching next to a sleeping Frodo who had slid down into the pit where they hid. Creepy! Fascinating! But Sam decided to play it cool and not let on he heard the split-screen conversation. Besides, we just spotted the Black Gate! *checks off on list of things to do* Whew! On that upbeat note... I hope you have a fantastic journey during your Quest! Stay safe, have fun, and I'll see you on the Road!

Hi, great to see you're still here! I was actually part of "Walk to Rivendell" a long time ago, when I wasn't really walking a lot and was still working. Stuff happened (lots of insomnia mostly) and I wound up not working regularly since 2005. Did some part time things, like movie extra work and plenty of volunteer work. Since 2012, I've been tracking my walking. I've walked over 16,000 miles the last 11 years, and have averaged at least 4 miles a day since 2016. It's gone up and down a bit the last few years - developed tendonitis around my knees which slowed me down. But that's finally better, and I'm averaging 6 miles a day so far this year.

OMG! It's so great to see you! Isn't it amazing how fast the time really does fly by!? I'm so impressed that you've kept track of your miles all this time! *bows deeply* I'll haul out my charts and see how far you've Walked through Middle-earth ;) I have some of the same knee stuff going on, so I totally relate to how much of a nuisance that is for our walks. *massive hug* I'm so glad you path has led you back here!!!!

So... we survived the battle at the Morannon, then the feasts, weddings, partings, etc. before finally reaching Rivendell and Bilbo again. Hard to leave that perfect place, but home calls, so we're on the road again and getting a little too close to Weathertop for Frodo's comfort. Not looking forward to nearing the Midgewater Marshes again, either... I still walk and do chores, but I've also been getting a good many miles from knitting like my fingers are possessed. No deadlines, just that "no idle hands" multitasking thing.

Greetings Fellow Walkers! So... did you see your shadow this morning? I know we're not groundhogs, but we are as capable as any furry burrowing beast to toss our shaded likeness onto the ground if the sun has its way, right? Here in my yard, I had a Shadow and Flame moment. I saw my shadow, so there'll be more flame in the fireplace for 6 more weeks ;) How are you coming along on your Quest? The wild weather going on across the country and around the world is keeping us all on our toes. Be sure to keep moving and keep your stamina up. I have my treadmill parked right in front of the TV so I'm sure to put at least a few miles in every day. It also makes it easier to put in those miles whilst being entertained... and distracted. ;) Meanwhile, back in Middle-earth, Sam, Frodo and I have had some excitement! We saw an oliphaunt thunder along right in front of us! And we've met up with some pretty intimidating Rangers; but we've gotten some great food and drink while seeing an incredible light show! Be sure to have fun on your Quest... and I'll see you on the Road!! :D

Greetings Fellow Walkers! Welcome to mid-February! There are some nasty storms moving all over the planet... cyclone in NZ and another batch of blizzards and tornadoes (no relation ;) across the U.S. I hope wherever you're standing that you're not just standing but are able to get some action going and collecting some mileage! Every activity counts, so be sure to keep track of your time and add it to your tally. You've gotta do things you enjoy so the exercising/action is something easy to stick with. I'm still working on my kitchen reno (shortening counter length & replacing the countertops with butcher block). WHAT WAS I THINKING!? But its kept me really busy. My poor dog feels so neglected... and shell-shocked at my sudden outbursts of frustration or self-deprecation. *shakes head* You know how it is... Meanwhile in Middle-earth, Frodo, Sam, Gollum and I have just left Faramir at Henneth Annun and are making our way to somewhere Faramir was a bit freaked about. This whole thing has been freaky; but it was really nice to have a break.... sort of. :) Take care, and keep moving! I'll see you on the Road!

Walk to Rivendell... and Beyond! March 2

Greetings Fellow Walkers! Welcome to March! I blinked... and there was March standing there bold as gold! It's a great month because its the last stop before Spring :D Here in Michigan, our calendar lists the months... January, February, Mud, April, May... This month always promises lots and lots of show-melted, rain-fed mud. Especially here on the country roads where I live my poor SUV/hobbity is covered in mud so I have to wipe off the brake lights and back window before going anywhere. It also makes it very difficult to go for walks when you're slipping on the gooey dirt road or it packs up on the bottom of your shoes so it's like wearing platforms that feel like anchors. But I welcome it all just to have Spring finally land here and the weather to warm up. Sadly, it's still a few weeks away, but I'm ready to go when it gets here :D How is it going in your neck of the woods or down your Road? Are you lining up some out-of-doors projects when the weather changes? Even if you live in the Southern Hemi, the wonderful Fall weather is moving in... which is my favourite season! What kind of activities have you been doing to gather up your mileage? Make sure you get some fun stuff in there to make it easier to keep on keeping on! Meanwhile, back in Middle-earth... Frodo, Sam, Gollum and I have made it to the Morgul straight stairs. We had a close call when Frodo started wandering toward the gates of Minas Morgul. "NO ADMITTANCE... ESPECIALLY IF ON HOBBIT BUSINESS" *sigh* It's going to be a long day! Stay Safe... and I'll see you on the Road! :D

Greetings Fellow Walkers! I hope you are having some great success in your Quests! I'm not meaning any earth-shaking performances... I'm meaning progress that has meaning for you :) Whether it's preparing for some sporting competition, serious yard work (now that warmer weather should be here soon), or just enjoying some wonderful walks that ease your mind and stretch your legs... that's all meaningful, imho! Doing things that you want to keep at and look forward to engaging. I can't wait to play in the yard again and go on some walks around the block on my country roads (around the block is 4 miles)! What are you looking forward to? Are you on a Quest now? DO TELL! Speaking of telling... back in Middle-earth, Frodo, Sam, Gollum and I have been climbing some stairs. A LOT of stairs! I hope there's at least a really great view once we get to the top of wherever it is we're going! Stay safe, have fun, and I'll see you on the Road!!

I should have given you the charts and your numbers in case you'd like to keep track of where you are in your Walk. Here they are along with your location in Middle-earth. Feel free to help me with the figuring/logic of this! I'm not too steady on figuring stuff like this anymore ;) Let's check out your numbers and go with 2012–2023 walking 16,000 miles (the past 11 years) plus the 76 days so far this year x 6 miles a day (456 miles) for a total of 16,456 miles! WOW! WELL DONE!!! I have used the Karen Wynn Fonstad Eowyn Challenge Site Charts to figure how far you've walked through Middle-earth. If you'd like to follow the charts, I've pinpointed where you are now. SO... here's how far you've come: You're mileage gathered as of 3/17/23 is16,456 All Hobbit + LotR Fonstad Charts (including Grey Havens) = 7,816 Total Miles ...You've walked through all of the LotR and Hobbit charts TWICE! [15,632 miles] But you still have 824 miles left over. That takes you to the second LotR chart again and 366 miles into the Rivendell to Lothlorien chart. The Fellowship has entered Moria and just left the Guardroom where Pippin dropped a stone into the well. "Fool of a Took!" = 16,456 miles. It's all uphill from here ;) I'll see you on the Road!!! *high five*
