A bit of beauty for you Can't Post

This morning a friend and I got to witness a dunlin murmuration over an estuary near us. I took a video but it's not great; fortunately someone else put a video up on youtube of a murmuration in the same place a few years ago.

My ears were burning [In reply to] Can't Post

I think this is my favourite murmuration clip. Although the quality is poor, I just love the formations and the joy of the women who witnessed it.

So many of the motions [In reply to] Can't Post

remind me of some of the moves and gestures in my daughter's Contemporary Dance style classes, and ballet as well.
Thank you!

Beautiful! [In reply to] Can't Post

When we lived in Melbourne, starlings used to do their dance over the city around twilight. Not nearly as large a group, but it was always mesmerizing. Here's a video of city starlings over Rome.

I love this [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't find a clip of it so I will have to trust my memory on this one.
Billy Connolly during his 'World Tour of NZ' series was travelling in a boat, entranced by the large number of dolphins frolicking and leaping around the bow. He was so overjoyed and said something like, 'There's something indescribable about watching wild creatures in their element that makes the heart soar'.
I couldn't agree more.

I'm lucky to live near an estuary [In reply to] Can't Post

that's an important feeding site for birds and have seen similar sights, though not in those numbers. We get dunlin, knot, sanderling, redshank, curlew, oyster catcher, all the usual suspects. My daughter saw a dunlin murmuration a couple of weeks ago while she was walking the dog. It's breath-taking!

*gasp!* Live art! Nature dance! [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't imagine what it was like to be standing there watching this... in the cool air and silence except for the sounds from and around this! Could you hear the sound of their wings? When a flock of Canadian geese fly over me in my yard, all I can hear is an occasional squawk and the beating of their wings through the air. A hush that's unique to them.

You would think a unified ballet like these would create its own little air current... yet the water stays so still! The reflection of their flight makes this all the more stunning! Then to see them settle down and flock on the water/ground. Wonderful... and the music matched it all perfectly!

Thank you for this!! I'm so happy you got to experience this!

Oh geez! [In reply to] Can't Post

That really is incredible!

Have you ever seen the movie, Mitty (aka The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) with Ben Stiller (who also directed it)?? There's a brief segment in the film with a murmuration of birds that's so cool! The whole film is filled with wonderful visuals and incredible landscapes. It really is one of my favourite films... and that surprises me more than anyone! ;) It's also a wonderful tribute to Life magazine as it loses its print form to an online world.

This clip shows some of the murmuration: Major Tom/Mitty

I love that movie [In reply to] Can't Post

I've watched it many times. Best thing Ben Stiller's ever done.

Couple of years ago I got hooked on an Icelandic police procedural on Netflix, Entrapped, and the lead detective was the drunk helicopter pilot in "Walter Mitty," Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.

so true [In reply to] Can't Post

I've been on many whale-watching trips but the time that we got surrounded by a dozen humpbacks who then proceeded to put on a show for us - clearly responding to our responses - ranks high among my peak experiences.

Fascinating! [In reply to] Can't Post

How the flock segues from transparent to totally dark within a second, separates and combines without knocking each other out. Magnificent.
