....after debating with xyz I stopped engaging on the thread as it just goes in circles.
In this video I do have a different reaction to the volcano. Nerd is willing to just go with it....but for me it is too far of a stretch.

One of my favorite channels about Tolkien. I love his use of maps and icons - I loved showing things to my daughter while we read LOTR to help her imagination. So good.

It does a great job of showing that you can make all the critical points you want without having to resort to toxic troll-dom.
Nerd of the Rings has been on Youtube for a while. He makes money from his videos. I don't know him personally but I would guess that his channel has become lucrative enough for him to make it a full-time gig.
His unwillingness to trade in the current toxic video making trend - full of vitriol and hyperbole and extrapolation - is definitely costing him money. It's costing him views. It's costing him "fans". It's even cost him his reputation. (As one of the early-visitors invited by Amazon - his presence alone at the event called into question his personal integrity. People seemed CERTAIN that he must be some kind of paid shill who was now going to sing Amazon's praises regardless... - that level of cynicism -all dressed up as wisdom - still staggers me.)
Meanwhile, he keeps choosing integrity over clicks.
I have tons and tons of admiration for him.
And - the craziest part!? He's still able to be critical. His points are still honest and intelligent and his own. It doesn't make him an Amazon stooge, or an apologist for ROP or any of that other nonsense. It just proves that you can be a decent, critical thinking human being AND have a youtube channel AND be critical of ROP all at the same time. In this day and age that feels like a miracle.

Because it comes from someone who has proven to have a deep knowledge about Tolkien, has a history of sharing and discussing Tolkien positively, and is reasoned and measured in its criticisms, and also is quite happy to discuss what does work and what's done well. This is far far preferable to relentless negativity.

I couldn't agree more with anything you wrote, Junesong.
I don't see eye-to-eye with Nerd of the Rings about the show - I'm much more positive about it - but I really appreciate his honesty and integrity. He had a different reaction to certain aspects of the show than I did yet we both found things to admire. He does the type of online criticism that used to be much more popular - nuanced and measured. And because of that, he has been accused of being a studio shill or a ROP hater. It boggles the mind!

He doesn't rely on clickbait, partisan politics, revolting thumbnails, or hate-mongering to drive home his analysis and opinions. I've enjoyed following his appraisal of the season.

I'm not an oliphaunt-sized fan of these videos, I much prefer reading text, gives the audience at least three times the number of WPM.
Anyway, what I want to see above all in a review like this is a reviewer who starts off from a position of wanting any Tolkien adaptation to be good. I just don't understand the mentality of someone who starts out with the opposite view. A [to me] very disappointing number of the 'fan' reviews out there fail even this basic test. I suppose my own view is that RoP so far has been, on balance, fairly so-so, with some great content, plenty that's good, plenty that's mediocre, and, yes, a few stinkers here & there, but focusing exclusively on the worst stuff is very much anathema to me.

Totally agreed! I love how balanced Nerd of the Rings is, giving a fair critical evaluation of the show rather than going with the trend of the extreme, sensationalised reactions.
