We planted crabapples, not something I would have picked, but they were beautiful in flower and the birds ate the apples.

but we were welcome to bring our own water and snacks. Just benches to sit on - when we weren't helping the crew pull ropes for the sail! The tide was coming in and wind blowing toward the north, so we gently sailed upriver, then had to motor back down to the port. Very smooth ride, except when motorboats passed by. Thank you, it was a full but relaxing day!

"Numbskulls" is too kind a word for those people! Orange-pecan scones are an elegant addition to watching that series. Yikes, my sympathies for having to work with Madame "but it's perfect the way I wrote it". Fortunately the publisher holds the final publishing strings, but still. May the rain hold off for your local Fourth celebrations!

what kinds of bugs attacked the kakabeaks, and whether they can be controlled? Fresh ginger! Will you be drying the roots, or slicing or shredding them for preserving? Mmm, enjoy the panforte!

It's been a very disjointed few days. We've had a blast of heat here that we're not accustomed to; it made me realise how few items of clothing I own that are respectable enough to wear in public AND suitable for high temperature and humidity. I feel a shopping trip coming on! It was 33C here on Thursday, even hotter down south; the breeze was hot, so not a lot of help. It made me feel quite out of sorts; didn't get much done; dead-heading the roses and watering the garden in the evening, mostly. We could definitely do with some rain now. Some places, mostly far north and south, have had thunderstorms but nothing here as yet. We'll see what next week brings! I've had two cucumbers so far from my plant in the greenhouse; they're so crunchy and juicy, much better than the shop ones - but that's true of most home-grown produce. I'm eagerly awaiting the tomatoes. I really support the planting of trees - but it has to be the right tree in the right place. The information on the impacts of urban trees was very interesting! If planned properly, they have much to offer. Whoever was responsible for the roadside plantings in our neighbourhood several decades ago couldn't have had a very clear idea of what they were doing; there are whitebeams and horse chestnuts in areas not wide enough to cope with them and the roots have pushed up the pavement/sidewalk turning it into a trip hazard. These are large trees with large, slow-rotting leaves so in autumn there's a lot of sweeping up to be done. Have a good week, everyone - cheers!

Glad you enjoyed your day. The Carpenters... that voice... so sad it was silenced so young. That is a lovely song for couples starting out though!

And it is difficult to dress for the hot air, when not even the breezes will help. Oh good, your cukes are ripening, I can imagine how sweet they are also! Here's hoping you do get a cooling rain soon!

I can so relate - although at least you knew it was Sunday. So exciting to hear the greenhouse is up and running, and the plants are loving it! Is there a method to which plants live in the greenhouse and which don't? Here's to a much-needed cool-down in the week ahead (fingers crossed)
