News story: Lost Tolkien work discovered in Bodleian archives at Oxford University Can't Post

A previously unpublished work by JRR Tolkien has been unearthed in the University of Oxford’s archives.

The Lord of the Rings author’s translation of a medieval religious text from the early 13th century had lain forgotten in the Bodleian Libraries’ collections until now.

His reworking of Sawles Warde, an early Middle English prose homily, which he titled Soul’s Ward in his calligraphic hand on the typescript, is to be published for the first time. It is an allegory in which the body is represented as a house.

...“It was just incredible. [Tolkien’s] manuscripts tend to be very fragmentary or full of revisions… In this case, since it was a typescript and the corrections were in a very neat hand, it was just amazing.”

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Just when you think there's nothing new to be found... [In reply to] Can't Post

And here's the same article in The Telegraph but also with the addition of photos of the first and last pages of the Soul's Ward typed manuscript.

Eight years earlier, Tolkien co-authored a note on "Sawles Warde." [In reply to] Can't Post

This typescript of Tolkien's translation of that Middle English work, which apparently had previously been found by Alan Bliss (who edited and published Tolkien's Finn and Hengest), is said in the article to date to circa 1955.

In 1947, Tolkien and his former pupil S.R.T.O. d'Ardenne published a short note focusing on the implications of just one misprinted word in published editions of Sawles Warde. In 2007, visualweasel and I tried to explain that piece for the lay reader in the following item at squire's J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia: A Reader's Diary, which is no longer online but mostly preserved at the Internet Archive:

"Iţţlen’ in Sawles Warde – Scott Kleinman."

I was not aware that the manuscript had previously been found, as my impression from the news stories was that it was a previously unknown manuscript. Can you say more about Alan Bliss's discovery of the manuscript, and why nothing was done with it at that time?

It's in the article linked by Ataahua: [In reply to] Can't Post

"They write that 'the existence of this translation has never been publicly discussed so far, either in print or online'.

The researchers believe the document was probably translated by Tolkien in either 1955 or 1956.

The typescript was accompanied by a 1985 note from Tolkien's late son, Christopher, which referred to the translation being found by Alan Bliss, Tolkien's former student, in 1983. They add that Tolkien wrote unpublished notes on the text and dated the original to around 1210."

In case it's not clear: "They" means Cossio and Goering, who are publishing it today. The translation was "publicly" unknown but previously seen by Bliss and Christopher Tolkien.
