That's kind of a big deal, if true

Do you know when that interview was? Christopher Tolkien passed away over 6 years ago, so either PJ was confused when he said it was 2 or 3 years ago, or this interview is quite old.

Given that Amazon is covering the wider Numenor story,

perhaps PJ has his eyes on stand-alone stories for film. Perhaps Beren and Luthien, or even Turin's tragedy.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. Do you know when that interview was? Christopher Tolkien passed away over 6 years ago, so either PJ was confused when he said it was 2 or 3 years ago, or this interview is quite old. The interview was supposed to be very recent. Here's the tweet from Fellowship of Fans, posted yesterday, May 14, 2026:
BREAKING: Peter Jackson reveals that him and his team are negotiating with the Estate to license more rights from Tolkien’s works. “Combination of Warner’s and us have been talking to the younger Tolkien members about the possibility of actually licensing some of the rights to the other books”. The question is: "How long they may have had dealings with the Estate BEFORE?"

Peter can be pretty secretive when he wants: apparently he and Colbert had been working on Shadow of the Past for well over a year and nobody was the wiser. It was done between him and Walsh (who live together), Boyens (who lives across the lawn) and, in that case, Colbert. So nobody WOULD have known. Same here: outside a pair of houses in the Wellington seafront (very much the "nerve center" of Lord of the Rings film adaptations: wonderful, isn't it, how innocous it all is?) nobody other than the Tolkien Estate and the studio heads will have had any knowledge of this. So who knows how long this has been going on? The Tolkien Estate itself had some uphevals in recent years. The initial shopping of the television rights was actually done when Christopher was still in charge, but soon enough control went to a board comprising five family memebers (ostensibly "led" by Simon Tolkien) and their lawyer. Simon would probably be friendly to Peter - he had auditioned for him (as Boromir) - back in the day, but he's so associated with Amazon Prime at present that I doubt he'd be the one to treat with New Line Cinema. Not to make too much of this, but he hadn't attended the Rohirrim premiere. (The situation is probably not as confrontational as these lines might imply: New Line's executives were sitting in the room during the early meetings with Amazon, but still!). However, I'm told an even younger generation - proverbially "led" by Royd Tolkien - had since started holding sway in the dealings of the Estate. Royd, it will be remembered, had cameos in both trilogies, "officiated" the Green Dragon, and attended the Rohirrim premiere. I'm told this happened "after season one" of Rings of Power. So yeah, these negotiations could have been going on for six months, or they could have been going on for three years. Who's to tell? It also means the Estate will be less distanced from the films going forward: one of the reasons for the coolness between Christopher and those productions was that the Estate told Peter they're not opposed to the production, but don't want to make it the "official" Tolkien-on-celluloid.
