The Hunt for Gollum - Andy Serkis Flies to New Zealand to Begin Prep

I didn't see the topic posted anywhere since this article was posted (apologies if I somehow missed it elsewhere). Per Variety, Andy Serkis flew to NZ on September 6th to begin prep for The Hunt for Gollum. No indication of timing otherwise, but I'm sure we will hear about actors arriving in NZ once that starts to occur. Based on the timing, it would seem they're looking to take advantage of the New Zealand summer. Hard to speculate beyond that since we don't know how many weeks of prep will happen here, and to what extent the individual departments have already begun their prep prior to Andy's arrival. Kiwi 'sibs, I suppose your time has come to keep an eye and ear out for anything you see in the wilderness!

I wonder how much green screen vs on-site filming they'll do.

Aka 'The Hobbit approach' vs 'The LOTR approach'. I know that on-location filming is more expensive than using green-screen but there's a definite 'realness' that comes across, which CGI just can't attain no matter how advanced the tech is.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. Fantasy novel - The Arcanist's Tattoo My LOTR fan-fiction

If they are bothering with New Zealand at all - not in UK studios like some cheap production - and this is supposed to be within LOTR framing, I'll chance going against any pessimism and predict real, on location filming to match the look and feel of LOTR, though "filming" itself might be a misnomer. Only Tarantino might insist on film these days. Let's make a verb out of "SD" or "flash" storage. ;)

I heard yesterday that one important member of the production crew is here working on preproduction. He/she had big involvement in LotR and The Hobbit. I haven't hear of any more potential actors apart from the well known 3 names already widely reported but not confirmed.

The Hunt for Gollum UK Production Is Ramping Up

Story at TheOneRing.com:
Trade reports this week confirm what’s been anticipated: The Hunt for Gollum is among the major studio shoots scaling up production logistics in the UK. While specific production details remain under wraps, the confirmation aligns with director Andy Serkis’s previously announced May 2026 filming start. The UK production base represents a strategic choice for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. While Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy filmed primarily in New Zealand, subsequent Middle-earth projects—including The Hobbit trilogy and Amazon’s The Rings of Power—have utilized UK and European studio facilities extensively. For The Hunt for Gollum, the UK location may prove particularly fitting. Serkis has stated the film will prioritize practical effects and on-location filming traditions from the original trilogy. The story itself is set in the wilds of Middle-earth—the Dead Marshes, the borders of Mordor, and the dark eaves of Mirkwood. UK moorlands and ancient forests could serve these locations well without relying heavily on digital effects The full article is here: https://www.theonering.com/...-heres-what-we-know/
