At first I wasn't super wild, but then I saw the official synopsis on Deadline [In reply to] Can't Post

And it actually makes me feel better.

Sounds like it's taking place 14 years after the Return of the King, after Frodo went into the west and that it's following Sam, Merry and Pip retracing part of their journey. If that's the case, than easily it wouldn't be jarring to bring Sean, Billy and Dom back for it since it would make sense that they look older now. I can see that its these three going through those chapters now at their age instead of being a flashback film.

And even at the most recent fan events that the Hobbits' actors have been doing, they all look good for their age, so them being older Hobbits in this small sequel of sorts would work much better than a flashback movie.
They can still incorporate flashbacks, but if they are working it as a sequel film, I think this would make more sense than this story that wasn't shown in the Fellowship of the Ring movie yet it happened.

Shadow of the Past [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought it would be a good idea to link to the Deadline article on Shadow of the Past (working title).

There's also an article posted now on the TORn homepage:

Shadow of the Past reaction: New movie provides long-missed eucatastrophe
March 25th, 2026 by weetanya

Quote
We’ve just learned that for the past few years, Stephen Colbert and his son Peter have been working on a script for the six chapters that were left out of Peter Jackson’s film version of Fellowship of the Ring, and will be named after one of the missing chapters: The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.

These six chapters fall between Three is Company and Fog on the Barrow-Downs, and happen right before Merry stumbles out of the Old Forest in Fellowship.

During Peter Jackson’s Tolkien Reading Day announcement, he brought Colbert onto a video call to announce the movie.

One of the very last things Jackson asked him was, “Now, do you have the time for this?”

And Colbert said, “I did not think I would have the time, as much as I love it. I knew I couldn’t do that and do this show at the same time, but it turns out that I’m going to be free starting this summer, so…”

“Isn’t that fortunate!” Jackson interjected.

“Isn’t that a ‘eucatastrophe’ right there?” Colbert finished.

The story continues here: https://www.theonering.net/...issed-eucatastrophe/

I'm not sure how to feel about this, it sounds less like it should be a theatrical feature than one of those animated, direct-to-video tie-ins that were popular back in the '90s and early 2000s.

I can understand that [In reply to] Can't Post

Personally, I am now more excited for this than Gollum since it seems to be that the original cast will be back, vs all the recast rumors with Aragorn in the Gollum movie.

I do however wish we could see something more standalone with War of the North.

But I will still for sure go and watch this movie when it comes out.

I also saw that both Billy and Dom reposted the announcement video on their Instagram [In reply to] Can't Post

Usually that's a pretty good sign and hint that they may be in it, which I would hope they would since Merry and Pippin are two of the characters listed in the synopsis, so I would hope it would be Billy and Dom coming back!

I honestly wondered the same thing if it was an April Fool's prank [In reply to] Can't Post

But looks like it's legit!

I did look on Instagram, and it looks like that both Billy Boyd and Dom Monaghan reshared the announcement video to their stories. That gives me very big hopes that those two will be back to reprise as Merry and Pippin, at least during the 14 years afterwards.

That makes me so hopeful and excited, Merry and Pippin were my favorites as a teen and I still have such a soft spot for them, so if Billy and Dom come back, it would make my day!

“The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past” A Timeline [In reply to] Can't Post

New article by Nancy "Mithril" Steinman at the homepage:

Quote
With the announcement of a second upcoming Lord of the Rings movie in the works written by Stephen Colbert, Philippa Boyens, and Peter McGee, and the release of its synopsis, speculation about what the movie will be about is only just beginning.

The synopsis in the Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema press release about The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is: “Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”

For reference, let’s take a look at the timeline that is mentioned.

Fourteen years after Frodo’s departure means the movie takes place in S.R. 1435/Fourth Age Year 14.

Elanor the Fair is born March 13, S.R. 1421, the same year that Frodo sets sail for the Undying Lands in September. Her birth day is also the start of the Fourth Age of Gondor.

Elanor will be fourteen years old at the time Shadow of the Past will take place, giving the film a young female lead.

The article continues here: https://www.theonering.net/...the-past-a-timeline/

In terms of the movies, I would place the year as 1419 (Shiire Reckoning). Peter Jackson places Bilbo's birthday party in S.R. 1400 (Third Age 3000). Frodo seems to depart Bag End one year later, placing his stabbing at Weathtop in 1401. The Ringbears take ship four years later (1405). Fourteen years after that is 1419. Elenor is probably about 16 by then in the continuity of the films. Still quite young for a hobbit-lass. Adjust the remaining dates given in the article accordingly according to your own head-canon.

It is set after Return of the King but explores chapters from Fellowship of the Ring that weren't even in the movie? What?

Will these be included as flashbacks or are are we moving those events to the fourth age now? Why? What is the threat or the goal here? Who is the villain? What is it about? I don't understand! No one is going to sit through a road trip movie with no stakes.

I feel like this is a desperate attempt to re-imagine Tom Bombadil so they can further distance themselves from Amazon.

Possible Film Timeline [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the movie might switch between the Fourth Age and events taking place during The Fellowship of the Ring, maybe even with younger actors playing the four hobbits in the past just as Martin Freeman was cast as the younger Bilbo. Now, lemme see if I can work out a probable timeline of events:

- September 22, 1400 (Shire-date): Bilbo's (and Frodo's) birthday party.
- September 1401: Frodo departs from Bag End. Earlier events of Shadow of the Past take place.
- October 1401: Frodo is stabbed on Weathertop.
- October 25, 1401: The Council of Elrond.
- December 25, 1401: The Fellowship departs Rivendell.
- March 25, 1402: The Ring is destroyed. The Fall of Sauron.
- September 1402: The hobbits return to the Shire ("twelve months to the day after we left").
- May 1, 1403: Samwise marries Rose.
- March 25, 1404: Elanor the Fair is born.
- Sometime in 1405: Frodo Gardner is born.
- October 1405: Frodo is ill on the anniversary of his stabbing on Weathertop.
- September 29, 1405: Bilbo and Frodo depart over the sea with the Three Keepers.
- 1406: At the start of the year the Fourth Age begins in the Reckoning of the Shire. At the Free Fair, Samwise Gamgee is elected Mayor of Micheal Delving.
- 1407: Rose, daughter of Samwise, is born.
- 1409: Merry, son of Samwise, is born.
- 1411: Pippin, son of Samwise, is born.
- 1413: Goldilocks, daughter of Samwise, is born. Samwise is elected for his second term as Mayor.
- 1414: Hamfast, son of Samwise, is born.
- 1415: Daisy, daughter of Samwise, is born.
- 1417: Primrose, daughter of Samwise, is born.
- 1419: Bilbo, son of Samwise is born. The Fourth Age events of Shadow of the Past take place.

If we allow for an extra year for Gandalf to return to Bag End and see Frodo and Sam depart, add one year to all dates after Bilbo's birthday party {except for Samwise's election(s) as Mayor).

Revised and Expanded [In reply to] Can't Post

I made some revisions and additions to my possible timeline to show how Shadow of the Past could fit within the existing films and other events taken from Tokien's "Tale of Years". This timeline begins with Peter Jackson’s year for Bilbo’s one hundred-eleventh birthday (although he gives the year as Third Age 3000).

1400 (Shire-date): September 22: Bilbo's (and Frodo's) birthday party.
1401: Frodo departs from Bag End in autumn. Earlier events of Shadow of the Past take place. Frodo is stabbed on Weathertop. October 25: The Council of Elrond. December 25: The Fellowship departs Rivendell.
1402: March 25: The Ring is destroyed. The Fall of Sauron. May 1: Crowning of King Elessar. Mid-year's Day: Wedding of Aragorn and Arwen. September: The hobbits return to the Shire “twelve months to the day” from when they departed.
1403: May 1: Samwise marries Rose.
1404: March 25: Birth of Elanor the Fair, daughter of Samwise. On this day the Fourth Age begins in the reckoning of Gondor.
1405: Frodo Gardner, son of Samwise, is born. Frodo is ill on the anniversary of his stabbing on Weathertop. September 29: Bilbo and Frodo depart over the sea with the Three Keepers.
1406: At the start of the year the Fourth Age begins in the Reckoning of the Shire. At the Free Fair, Samwise Gamgee is elected Mayor of the Shire.
1407: Rose, daughter of Samwise, is born.
1409: Merry, son of Samwise, is born. Peregrin Took marries Diamond of Long Cleeve.
1411: Pippin, son of Samwise, is born.
1412: Faramir, son of Peregrin, is born.
1413: Goldilocks, daughter of Samwise, is born. Samwise is elected Mayor for the second time.
1414: Hamfast, son of Samwise, is born.
1415: Daisy, daughter of Samwise, is born.
1416: Meriodoc, called the Magnificent, becomes Master of Buckland.
1417: Primrose, daughter of Samwise, is born.
1418: Peregrin becomes the Took and Thain. King Elessar makes the Thain, the Master and the Mayor Counsellors of the North-kingdom.
1419: Bilbo, son of Samwise is born. Elanor turns 15. The Fourth Age events of Shadow of the Past take place.

If we allow for an extra year for Gandalf to return to Bag End and see Frodo and Sam depart, add one year to all dates after Bilbo's birthday party {except for Samwise's election(s) as Mayor).

I feel like this is a desperate attempt to re-imagine Tom Bombadil so they can further distance themselves from Amazon.

The summary says Elenor is finding out how close the Fellowship came to failure. So it would seem to be an Elonor retrospective/flashback.

I'd like to see an extended focus on Bombadil, and really some concrete revelation about his true nature and origin. No leaving it up to interpretation and the "Mystery Box." That said, I'm pretty sure I'll be disappointed on this bit.

I would rather see a bad job of de-aging than recasts. But even fans can do a great job of de-aging now, so I think it will be well done as far as that goes, if done that way. I'm making no claims, however, on the quality of the script. And in today's Hollywood of race-swaps, gender-swaps, and unrealistic girl-bosses, there's plenty of room for that kind of self-inflicted damage.

This seems like a good time to go over the synopsis again: "Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began."

It seems very likely that we can look forward to Sean, Dom and Billy reprising their roles, at least in the Fourth-Age portions of the movie. Whether they will be de-aged for the flashback portions or even recast is a whole other question. There is a good chance that Fredegar "Fatty" Bolger will be worked somehow into the narrative, though I don't think it would work here to include the sale of Bag End to the Sackville-Bagginses or the move to the house in Crickhollow.

The film might require a new take on the hobbits' encounter with Old Man Willow (if it happens at all) to differentiate it form the similar scene in the film version of The Two Towers. Of course we will see both Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, and I won't be surprised if Phillipa Boyens manages to expand Goldberry's role in the story. I have to assume that the major set-piece of the film will be the Barrow-downs and the encounter with the Barrow-wight (or Wights?). The Barrow-blades are not needed as we already have Strider presenting the hobbits with weapons in The Fellowship of the Ring. Perhaps the Black Riders will be given more to do. My assumption is that the secret that Elanor discovers that almost brings Frodo's mission to ruin is the encounter with the Barrow-wight.

Ali Astin Rumored to be in the Cast [In reply to] Can't Post

Some contributor submitted a rumored casting of Ali Astin, Sean Astin's now 29 year-old daughter, as Elanor Gardner in The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.

Sorry, I can't find an image that I can re-size properly. But she's a lovely young woman.

This, of course, is pure nonsense as Elanor is a young hobbit lass still in her early teens in the time frame of the film. However, it is entirely possible that Miss Astin could appear as a different character, possibly another hobbit or maybe as one of Queen Arwen's handmaidens. Would you like to see her in the film?

Thanks for laying out the book timeline and some of the other issues. [In reply to] Can't Post

Your suggestions seem entirely plausible, but we know that the writers will do what they will do. It will be interesting to see how much of a purist Tolkien superfan Colbert turns out to be, especially working with Boyens and the rest at WingNut.

According to the synopsis, Sam, Merry and Pippin will be retracing their steps etc., but surely we’ll see young Frodo and young versions of his companions in the Old Forest and on the Barrow-downs, interacting with Old Man Willow, Bombadil, Goldberry, Old Man Willow, and the Barrow-wight. I think I’d rather see recasting than de-aging of the middle-aged actors.

It kind of sounds like the Hobbit road trip down Memory Lane will be spiced up by the mystery to be solved by Elanor. She may well be the lead character, or at least has to be a major one. I hope that there won’t be another internet meltdown if that is so. Peter Jackson once said that when they made LotR, they thought the target audience was teenage boys and that turned out to be completely untrue. The days of hero being synonymous with male are over and there was and is a much wider audience for Tolkien than adolescent boys of all ages.

They may well expand Goldberry’s role. In book LotR she’s basically just Tom’s wifey, hardly the wild and potentially dangerous River-daughter. But I really don’t want to see either her origins or Tom’s explored more fully. For me it’s enough that they’re both themselves, unique and unclassifiable, more than human and not subject to the limitations that govern Humans and even Elves. And I do not want to see Tom and Goldberry dancing around. That’s one reason I very much liked Rory Kinnerar’s Bombadil in RoP. He was whimsical but was also wise and mysterious without ever being ridiculous.

Theoretically, I would go to see a live action movie based on any part of LotR made by WingNut Films. I’m also a fan of Colbert. But 25 years after the trilogy, will a relatively small story with what is basically a known outcome – the survival of the Hobbits – draw an audience? Though anyone who had seen LotR knew that Bilbo was going to survive the events of The Hobbit movies, and enough people went to see those that each made either side of a billion dollars, so maybe?

I suppose that we saw Colbert ‘s son and co-writer Peter McGee as a kid in that somewhat cringy Colbert family cameo in The Hobbit.

Has it been announced that Serkis will be directing this as well as The Hunt for Gollum? I would have thought that rather unlikely.

The sun yet shines

Let's start a new rumor. [In reply to] Can't Post

Ali Astin will be cast as Goldberry. That, at least makes more sense than casting her as 15 or 16 year old Elanor. Maybe Goldberry will be the first person that the hobbits encounter in the Old Forest and she will bring them to Tom.

No, no director has been announced as of yet.
