*gets keys, opens door* It's a Fast Fiesta Friday! Can't Post

Greetings, all and sundry, to Fiesta Friday - and a speedy one it is, thanks be to TPTB! Heart

It's been an unusually warm week here in New England, and that means everything is bursting out in leaves and early blooms (and the pollen count is high) - and the bees are happily buzzing amongst the purple Rhododendrons. We'll have some good showers today and then temps will be down to more normal for Spring here.

So come on it! I've got cold and hot sandwiches on the buffet, including my favorite (chicken salad with grapes and walnuts). The blenders are primed and ready. Order you favorites, and tell us what you've been up to, and what your weekend plans are!

*puts quarters on jukebox* How about some "spring-y" music? Or gentle Autumn tunes?

Greetings from rainy/sunny Michigan! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the sandwiches, dernwyn! I have been HONESTLY thinking of chicken salad sandwich with grapes all day! You've just burst the whole idea into fireworks with WALNUTS! *wild applause* (btw... I just spelled applause as applesauce. I think I'm hungry ;)

We've had serious flooding throughout Michigan. Like... dam-bursting flooding the worse in nearly 20 years! Here's what AI had to say about how many lakes and other water bodies we have. I grew up within 3 miles of 5 very large lakes.

"Michigan has over 11,000 inland lakes, with official estimates identifying roughly 11,037 lakes that are 5 acres or larger. When including smaller ponds and lakes, the state contains over 64,000 lakes and ponds. Additionally, Michigan is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes, contributing to its massive freshwater resources."

So when there's flooding, it's pretty epic. I was supposed to go get my daughter today for a dr appt, and between her and me, there are 5 major flooded roads making it impossible to get to her. So here I am basically on time for FIESTA! *geeky happy dance* Actually the sad part about our delay is that we were going to go see "Project Hail Mary" and play my twizzler game. Twizzlers are my all-time fav candy, and they show up all over the place in the film. So instead of a "drinking" game, I have a "twizzler munching" game. ;)

And one last fyi... tomorrow (Sat 4/18) is the annual Record Store Day where you get to whatever record shop my be near you and go hang out and maybe get a vinyl :D I've still got my 200+ collection started in 1968 and on. So I really want to get me to a store!

Thanks for taking such great care of us, dernwyn! Have a GREAT weekend :D

well hello! [In reply to] Can't Post

I must say it was a thrill to get on so fast!

I missed last week because I was traveling. Flew to San Diego, spent three days with my nephew, his wife, & two of their three boys, then spent two days on the train coming home. Had a lovely time. It's interesting to see how very different their identical twin boys are, personality-wise; S. is focused, intense, and extremely confident, while H. is dreamy and gentle and kind. They are both better rowers at nearly 16 than their older brother, now rowing for the University of Washington, was as a high school senior or their dad, who rowed for Harvard, was as a college senior! (There was a LOT of rowing talk all weekend ....)

I'm going to have a grilled cheese with ham because it is still not warm here -- we had two feet of snow in the mountains yesterday, which we needed because the snowpack is very low, and it was 37 degrees here this morning. Not complaining. We're supposed to get a warmer-than-usual summer.

Water, water everywhere! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was just reading about the flooding - and damage - and roads washed out, hoping it wouldn't impact you badly! I'm sorry that you have to re-schedule the doctor, AND miss the movie! Unsure I hope you can re-schedule!

Twizzlers? Oh, thank you for warning me! Laugh Here's something just a little bit healthier.

Thank you for the heads-up about Record Store Day, I wonder if our local vinyl store will be having specials - need to check them out. Do you often play your records? I went through mine a couple months ago, and found some that had gotten mildewed and were no longer playable. Frown

I do hope you get plenty of sunshine now to dry up the flooding! Take care! Heart

I saw about your floods ... [In reply to] Can't Post

having just been through a couple here, I can empathize! Hope the waters recede soon and you can get to the movie. Have you seen it already? I loved it. Waiting on the book from the library, there were many holds ahead of me.

What a pleasant trip! [In reply to] Can't Post

Visiting, then taking a relaxing train ride home. It's good that you're close enough to visit often with those cool young'uns, your family does seem to have rowing "in the blood"!

Here's ham with Gruyere cheese, I also like Vermont Cheddar but it doesn't melt as well.

I saw that your area had finally gotten a good snowfall. What plants do you have coming up?

A bit late, because it's been so cold. Our flowering plums are done flowering, but the cherries are still going. No sign of dahlias yet.

When the menu has one thing [In reply to] Can't Post

Your chicken salad offering triggered a memory of me visiting relatives in western Colorado (my origins), and we visited a few tiny, overlooked towns in the county for something to do. Stopped for lunch in one, where there was a gift store/"lunch" sign and literally the only food option in town. We sat down at one of 2 tables, I asked for the menu, the waitress rolled her eyes ("big-city tourists!") and said, "We have no menu. We have chicken salad sandwiches today, and that's it." (on Wonder bread)

Nevertheless, a snob I am not, and I would like one, especially if there are walnuts in it. So tasty on a Friday afternoon.

Isn't our New England spring great? Green buds everywhere, plus flowering trees, plus forsythia, plus daffodils, and now I sound like Tolkien describing with glee every plant I walk past. (That's what winter does to us.)

Quiet weekend ahead for me: running errands and getting caught up on TV. I started Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix and it overcame my skepticism--how do you make a heartfelt, comedy/drama about an autistic attorney? But they pulled it off: never mocked her, never shamed her, and showed the spectrum of responses to her: supportive father, skeptical colleagues, the usual best friend, and a kindly Prince Charming. And if she's gonna fixate on something, I'm glad it's whales. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also on my list from friend's rec.

Happy weekend, everyone!

I saw pictures and read about the floods in Michigan, and your story about encountering 5 flooded roads sounds nerve-wracking. Enjoy the movie when you can get to the theater!

The forsythia are abundant! [In reply to] Can't Post

So much yellow around! Oh yeah, yellow and green, Tolkien's colours!

That's funny about "lunch" at the two-table store! I assume it was "one-course prix fixe"? Laugh

Thank you for the Attorney Woo review, I had been wondering if that had been done well.

Enjoy the relaxing weekend, and watch out for the showers, we just had a lovely short thunderstorm go through here!

UB Con tthis Weekend [In reply to] Can't Post

The University of Buffalo is hosting UB Con this weekend, though my spouse doesn't feel quite up to doing any cosplay for it (a wisdom tooth erupted even at her age and it's been causing issues). No Tolkien-related events seem to be on the schedule unless there's a session of The One Ring that I haven't noticed.

very [In reply to] Can't Post

you go up the coast from Ventura to Pismo Beach, across Vandenberg AFB - great ocean views all the way. Then the Central Valley, not quite as scenic, then you're sleeping and wake up in time to go around Mount Shasta and up through some really gorgeous country in southern Oregon (lots of mountains to see). Then cross over the Cascades and basically follow the Willamette and then the Columbia rivers for a while. The rest of the second day is not quite as scenic but by then I'm ready for a nap.

Wisdom teeth don't have much wisdom. [In reply to] Can't Post

I once told people that I still had my wisdom teeth...in a box in a drawer. Tongue Finally tossed them out. I hope she's feeling better!

What did you enjoy at the Con?

Hello! There's a lot of weather going on out there... [In reply to] Can't Post

snow on the hills, floods in Michigan etc. I never realised Michigan had so many lakes! Our weather is behaving at the moment - it's been a sunny spring day, a little chilly round the edges but you can feel the returning strength in the sun.. After a couple of hours wrestling with making blackout curtain liners for my bedroom I went and sat in the garden for a while; highlight, watching an orange tip butterfly exploring a cloud of forget-me-nots. I didn't rush for the camera, just enjoyed the moment. We tend to be obsessed with recording/capturing things these days - sometimes it's enough to just be there.
Purple rhododendrons (ponticum) are something of a plague in our local country park; they are undoubtedly beautiful, but they stifle anything beneath them and spread like blazes! They're kept in check by volunteers who have 'rhodie-bashing' sessions.
I've never heard of putting grapes in a chicken salad sandwich; might try that. What I do love is a nice ripe Brie sandwich with plenty of walnuts; creamy, crunchy, savoury, very tasty.
Spring music? Here's a golden oldie! Mister Blue Sky, by ELO. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQUlA8Hcv4s

Attorney Woo is wonderful [In reply to] Can't Post

perhaps my favorite K-drama. She's a delight. I've seen the actress in other stuff and I'm amazed at how well she portrayed an autistic person. She has said she had doubts and took a year to research the part after she accepted it.

(Also, she not only looks like a friend of mine, I've realized that said friend is probably also on the spectrum!)

my dad told me [In reply to] Can't Post

there were a lot of things I would not be permitted to do until I had my wisdom teeth. They usually come in in the mid-20s for most folks.

Mine came in at 16. And I still have them. Did my dad ever decide I was wise? Jury remains out.

Butterflies and forget-me-nots! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, that's a sight to simply enjoy! My forget-me-nots are just starting to poke through the ground. Oh yes, rhododendrons can quickly take over areas, they need to be cut back regularly.

Brie with walnuts? Is a bit of salad okay?

It's been a looong time since I last heard that ELO song, thank you!

Woo hoo! and hello to you all! [In reply to] Can't Post

It does sound like there's a fair bit of weather going on around some of us. I just received a text from our MetService weather advisory org that we're in for more thunderstorms and rain after yesterday's storm. Oops! And here comes the rain! Wellington has had some flooding in the past day. One friend had water up to the top of her front stoop and into boxes in the garage. None in the house, fortunately. We've been fine so far. Pippin Cat and I got in a sunny walk this morning. Did I hear that Altaira is traveling around down here somewhere? I hope they'll have blue skies and fair winds.

Since I last reported in, I finished seeing all three LOTR films at the Embassy Cinema (WONDERFUL!) and got to Armageddon Scifi Con to hear Andy Serkis, Graham McTavish and New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison give talks. Andy had just finished the first filming for Hunt for Gollum, was headed home, but will be back at the end of the year. What a funny man! And McTavish, as you probably, know, moved to NZ with his family after The Hobbit work and is firmly settled here. He made a second series about New Zealand after his Men in Kilts show about Scotland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVXVlJNUuEc I have yet to find it here, unfortunately. Morrison has played such dour characters in film, but he was extremely funny and engaging in person and played the guitar and sang beautifully. Artemis II had just taken off for the Moon that week, so I taped my huge NASA patch on the back of my jacket as my cos-play for the year. For launch day I had taken my laptop to a local cafe, and a friend and the staff and I watched them shoot off into space! I was the only one who had watched the first Moon landing on tv. I'll wager there are a few of you here who also had that privilege. Wink
