What? Friday already? Time for Fiesta!

Greetings dear TORn friends! Welcome to Fiesta! Some weeks just fly by, and this one certainly did for me. Errands, appointments, and meetings, oh my! B.G. and I did have a very good meeting with a landscaping company to see the design they came up with for our front and back yards. It's definitely the company we're going to go with. Next week they'll be fixing settled soil and flagstone close to our house foundation, but the actual landscaping won't be started until the Spring. I'm particularly excited about an idea I had that they executed perfectly: a round sitting area, surrounded by flowering plants, with an ammillary sundial in the center. Similar to the one below: We'll source it ourselves, but it will provide such a relaxing point of interest in the yard, and probably a perch for resident birds. What have you been up to this week? Fun plans for the weekend? Ours will be yet another fun weekend of sport with rugby and cricket on Saturday, and football on Sunday. Woot! Order up your favorite drink, grab a plate for the buffet, and let us know how you're doing! *puts quarters on juke box* an old song will do this fine Friday! Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Is that sundial set to Standard Time or Daylight Savings Time? What a lovely yard makeover (I like the idea of flagstones near the house foundation), and that will be a fun sitting area! Might I have a hot chocolate, please, Altaira? Our little church held its Thanksgiving get-together last night, SO many good cooks, I'm still feeling stuffed! It was a happy and chatty gathering. Tonight several area churches are having an Ecumenical service to benefit an area food pantry and the local family support agency. Our choirs each have a piece to sing, and will combine for three pieces. Ours will also ring handbells for the final hymn. A busy evening! Any sign of snow out there yet, Altaira? It's getting chilly enough to appreciate being able to watch all the games indoors! Hm, something old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM-K2xVFyk0

I believe you adjust them manually to be as accurate as possible. Ha! It will be like the old days where you actually had to wind dials in various directions. What a fun weekend you have planned! Eating and singing sounds very elvish and/or hobbity. No snow on the mountains yet! We had some a few weeks ago, but it's long since melted, and I've heard there's no snow in the forecast until closer to the 20th. It's not a big deal for those of us on the front range, but the ski areas may be underwhelming for the Thanksgiving skiers. Enjoy your weekend!!

We've had squally weather overnight but it's supposed to settle as the day progresses, so I guess I won't have an excuse to not get into the garden to start tidying it up for Christmas. (There's a brushy pine bush that's got too big for its britches and the ongoing war against pest plants.) Apart from a bit of housework, I've got nothing else on this weekend so it should be nice and relaxing. However, I am making progress on Christmas presents! I try to get them out of the way before December so that I'm not anxious in those final weeks (and to have time to order things from overseas, if necessary). How does everyone else manage Christmas plans: are you an early-bird like me, or do you enjoy the pressure of last-minute buying? Have a great weekend, everyone. :)

once the growing starts, gotta get that early trimming done. What's the worst invasive plant you have to deal with? I do much of my Christmas shopping at summer fairs and local stores, with occasional things online, as long as they don't take too long to arrive! Then I try to get the packages mailed out by the first week of December. Do you have very many to mail?

By far it's climbing asparagus. It's a strangling vine that nestles in the roots of plants and trees that you want to keep, and laughs off both Round-up and Woody Weed Killer - and once the root ball gets beyond a certain size, it's damn hard to dig out (especially when it's knotted into the roots of other plants). I hate that weed with a passion. As for Christmas presents, I don't mail any out anymore; I only buy for people who are physically present. Everyone else gets a lovely message on Christmas Day.

it's been a wet, miserable day here! Flood alerts in Wales and the Midlands - fortunatelynot here, and not too cold either. The room is cluttered up with knitting group paraphernalia - we had a big donation of yarn yesterday - and I'm trying to do some sewing, so the place is basically a mess. There's not a lot of space here. Still, at least I have plenty to do that doesn't involve being out in the rain. I'll be making soup tomorrow - ideal for this weather! I like the sound of the garden redesign; always fun to give a place a new look. The sundial is a nice touch. Main event (whoopee...) of my week was an eye injection following a retinal bleed, the thought of which had been squicking me out for ages, but actually it was perfectly tolerable - painless in fact, thank goodness! I have two more to go, at monthy intervals, but I'm not worried about them now. Have a good weekend, folks - cheers!

We had a slightly short week, having gone to Disneyland yesterday. 26k steps later and my feet are quite sore! It was a fun day though. Luckily we also had massages pre-scheduled for tonight, so that was a great choice. Work this week was busy but didn't drive me crazy, so I consider that a win. Especially as layoff season is in full effect, with employers dropping folks like flies ahead of Thanksgiving. SoCal, and most of California as a whole, is receiving a big atmospheric river this weekend. The rainfall total is a bit up in the air (pun intended), as it depends on what the storm does after tonight. One scenario results in several inches of rain over the next couple of days. Once again, there's worry about the fire burn scar areas, between mudslides and flooding. Either way, we plan to have a relaxing weekend indoors. Happy weekend, everyone!

I'm staring at today's date and blinking confusedly, as it just doesn't seem right to say "mid-November" already. Oof. I always have the idea that I'll become that person who has their Christmas presents in order before Thanksgiving, but it never seems to happen when that time of year comes around. I did buy a couple of gifts yesterday at Disneyland, so I'm already off to a better start than usual. Maybe I've turned a new leaf!

I'd ask about pouring white vinegar on its roots, but that would probably kill the good plant! I looked it up - it's another one of those imported invasives, like Japanese knotweed here. You wish you could use it to strangle whoever thought it was a good idea to plant it on a different continent. *sigh* I'd love to have my daughters here on Christmas Day, but distance and their work schedules prohibit that...

it's imagining what it'll be like that's so much worse than what it's actually like! The latest project is a small one. When my daughter had their kitchen redesigned, there was a cubby hole in the pantry area built in for a dog bed. It's his 'safe space'. I've been making a little patchwork curtain to go over it, ready for the winter nights.

A patchwork curtain for the dog bed! And what a clever idea, making a built-in dog bed area. I'd never heard of something like that before, but if the pantry area is large enough, it's a good use of the space at the floor, saves having to bend down low for things.

I have no experience with climbing asparagus, though it does seem that the young shoots are edible, similar to the garden variety. I've read that climbing asparagus shoots do seem to be thinner and can be more bitter.

My days seem to be getting fuller with each passing year of supposed semi-retirement! I remember Dad saying the same thing. Exciting thing that may not happen: My publisher stopped publishing and handed off their responsibilities to Red Wheel Weiser, and they have approached me about doing a second edition! With some major revisions, including the title. I agree with them that the first title didn't pull in the people the book is aimed at--most people assume it's about Jane Eyre, not heroine journeys. And they want me to update some sections, which I also agree with. So I put together a proposal and now we shall see. I suspect it is the assistant editor responsible for me who is most interested in this; whether his board agrees is another thing! But fingers crossed it happens! I'm also now part of two online writing groups where we do check-ins and writing sprints together. Very enjoyable and I'm amazed how much I get down during the sprints. The novel progresses! Spent most of the week under the weather--nothing serious, but as nasty a cold as it's ever been my privilege to have. Today I'm in the "my head feels stuffy but I'm no longer a snot factory" stage. I'm going to clean the house today because OMG it's a disaster area. How does that happen so fast? Nothing going on tomorrow, but from now on there's something going on every weekend through the end of the year, so I'm just going to stay home and do my jigsaw puzzle and continue binging "Stranger Things" in preparation for the new season dropping soon. We're in real mid-November weather now. Not too cold yet but plenty of rain and we've had a couple good storms. Staying inside is nice. Love the sundial! I had not known that adjective before. My parents had a round sitting area with a traditional sundial in the middle. It was gone before we closed up the house; wonder where it went? I would have kept it . . . I'll make myself an Angel Mist.

And I bet the dog does: his own cave, but underfoot, just as a dog likes to be. We had a tiny kitchen in the family home and the 95-pound lab was usually right in the middle of it. A friend gets eye injections. We all go "ewww!" but like you, she says "It's actually not that big a deal." I remember a nurse telling me once that children think our skin is like a balloon and cuts are so scary - and band-aids so magical - because we might "pop!" I think we all retain that idea when it comes to eyes.

That's great news about "Jane Eyre's Sisters", here's hoping the second edition happens! Is that nasty cold thingy going around in your area? A bunch of us were hit with it in mid-October, all one could do was sleep. It took most two weeks for it to clear up, and some are still ailing. Chicken soup and tea! What jigsaw are you working on now?

my dad used to say that a cold is three days coming, three days here, and three days going. This one is almost but not quite gone. At least it lets me sleep through the night, but in the morning I sound like a smoker, hacking away. I'm doing this puzzle: https://www.amazon.com/..._asin_title&th=1 It's a tricky one!

The hardest part of that huge project is deciding on who, what and when. You've got your landscaping company and design all set to go... leaving just the "when" to get started. I like it that you can start the prep work now and have until Spring to finalize the plans :D How Fun! I love the sundial! My plans for the weekend literally flipped like a coin... but it's turned out to be good. It was really cool that the weather today was in the 60s!!! I thought those days were gone until next Spring because we had snow Sunday-Tuesday. Seriously! So I got a LOT of outside stuff done today. I'm putting metal rods/posts and plastic animal fencing around my newer small trees, rose bushes, etc. Otherwise the deer and bunnies will chomp all of the tender branches down to nothing during the cold and snow of Winter. It was really a lot of fun to get them protected when I wasn't sure I'd get to it before it got colder. I think I'll grab some eggnog and plan the upcoming week. LOTS going on all the time nowadays! Thanks for taking such great care of us, Altaira! Have a a great weekend everyone!
