tucked in there, now that is a perfect picture! Hot cocoa and chicken soup (and a touch of meds) do wonders for colds. I'm doing better today, thank you, gramma!

...I'm definitely wishing it had been the Mariners. The first-ever pinch-hitter grand slam in the World Series??? And so many of those innings had loaded bases - so close, so close!

We got our Covid vaccine boosters on Friday, and were both feeling quite dozy yesterday - hard to get the usual things done, and nothing left over for a Fiesta visit. A bit livelier today, though, and no other issues beyond a little tenderness at the site. There have been severe storms in large parts of the country this week, with lots of damage done, but blessedly no deaths. All south of us, though - nothing worse than a bit of rain for us. We had our first strawberries! Just a handful, but a lot more are coming on. Also a reasonable amount of asparagus, and vast quantities of broad beans. I've a large number of seedlings potted up now, ready to be planted out once there's reason to hope the worst of the storm winds have passed. My capsicums, after being very slow to germinate, have burst out very satisfyingly. I had an odd and rather moving experience when out for a run the other day. (Note: refers to the death of an animal) There are a lot of putangitangi/paradise shelducks around, generally in pairs, though there are a couple of paddocks where they congregate in larger numbers. I was near one of these paddocks when I saw a dozen or so of them on the road. As I got closer I realised that every single one was female, which is quite unusual with these birds - they stick fairly closely to their pairs. And then I saw the corpse they were surrounding, badly mangled but clearly very recently killed; no doubt knocked down by a vehicle. A female putangitangi. It felt like seeing a chorus in a Greek tragedy. Unsettling and upsetting, but beautiful in a strange way. Wishing everyone a peaceful weekend (what remains of it).

It's good that you both got your shots, but the aftermath isn't very pleasant. I got mine with my flu shot at the same time (one in each arm). Would you believe I had more grief with the flu site? I'm glad the worst of the storm missed you, but it was still close enough to get your attention for prevention of damage to young plantings. Your story about the roadside gathering and mourning for their sister shelduk was so moving. Truly. It's easy to forget the connections of all life for their own and others. Thank you... it brings forward in my mind the frailty, beauty and meaning of life and love.

...Yamamoto never even broke a sweat! But I did fear for a moment he'd be replaced after that pitch traveled up the hitter's forearm. Great comeback!

The first tiny bites of sweetness - wonderful! And glad the peppers have finally decided to get going. My son's been reading to me some of the new Wingspan bird cards, these ones are fan-designed cards which have been accepted by the game's creators and given a professional look to fit in with the original cards. One is the putangitangi! So I read him your story, and he gasped, "Those ducks were having a wake." Good to get those boosters out of the way!

that the putangitangi have made it onto those cards! They're not the most well-known of birds. Yes, it did feel like a wake. In fact one of the meanings of "tangi" or "tangitangi" is to cry or mourn (their call does have a mournful sound).

And so many "near misses"...then that homer on a full count... LA is a very sleepy but very happy town today.

than the 15-inning game the Mariners had to play to get to the ALCS! I'm actually cheering for the Blue Jays. American League, y'know, and also if they win it means we did good to go 7 games with them and come down to the last run. But also, I'm just watching to see baseball at the highest level. And that Ohtani is something! I liked the clips of the watch party in Japan.
