If Elijah Wood has been shown the screenplay, I guess that all but confirms that he has been invited to return.

I can't think of another reason for Elijah to be given the script, unless he was a guest at Fran and Peter's place and they all got royally drunk and in the midst of merriment Peter said, "Hey, guess what I've got to show you?" Frodo might be used to book-end the story? Perhaps he'll be writing in the Red Book and gets to the meeting at Rivendell when news of Gollum's escape was announced, and he looks off into the distance to ponder how that came about...
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. That could put Elijah in the interesting position of Mo-Capping himself à la ABBA, because although he's still looking good, he's not looking his 18-years-old from LOTR. He barely got away with it for The Hobbit thirteen years ago. And he has the perfect director to handle it.

But I would find it funny if, amid some of the fan conventions the LOTR cast has been to lately, he simply read Sir Ian's copy on loan. Given how loose-lipped Sir Ian has been, I could totally see him saying "sure, take it home to read, for all I care!"
