My little house had a couple of trees in the yard and was stark when I bought it. But I've been working on creating my own Fangorn Forest :D

It's just been too blasted hot to get involved with those 2 projects that would take more than a few days to do Unsure But I haven't given up!!

His is was broken. He'd already lost her.

What merciful timing for your Niece to appear. Such a lovely outing and perfect in its simplicity. Wonderful that she's coming back and will be within reach for these moments. One thing my Balti daughter says all the time, "I miss not being able to hang out."

I'm so so sorry for your loss, Annael. Wow... *warm hug*

Five days of sunshine. [In reply to] Can't Post

This week's been lovely - frosty mornings followed by brilliant days. On Friday we went to a regional park for a lovely walk along the beach, admiring oystercatchers and dotterels and gulls and just enjoying the sunshine. Then lunch in a particularly nice cafe that's a bit out of our way, so we only visit it when we go to that park. I'm a bit concerned that the cafe mightn't survive long-term, as the pottery it's on the grounds of is closing down, but at least we did our small bit to support it.

The weekend, in contrast, is grey and gloomy so far, but that just means we appreciate the sunshine all the more. Still enjoying watching the mallards and putangitangi (native shelducks) conducting their courtships. And enjoying the new lambs gambolling on farms all around us.

Yesterday we made moussaka (used some of those aubergines from last summer) and baklava - very nice, and also gave a nice lot of my favourite meal: leftovers. Then we watched "Tempest" (the 1982 Paul Mazursky movie) to keep the whole Greek theme going.

The first of my seeds have germinated! A tomato variety I don't know the name of, as its original came in a "Heritage Mixed" packet years ago, and I've save seeds from it ever since. Hopefully the beginning of many.

I know there are a fair few fans of both flying and Antarctica here, so you may enjoy this story:

Winter flights to the Antarctic are very much not for the faint-hearted!

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

That's my plane! I was on those for 20 years. I've flown on night vision goggles and experienced the black hole effect they describe. That can lead to spacial disorientation, like losing your balance and not knowing which way is up, and that is often deadly in aircraft. Well done, Herk crews.

Ohhh... I had some heritage tomatoes years ago, and they were the BEST I've ever had!

And thank you for the fantastic article on the Herk rescue flight. There was a movie done years ago called "Eight Below" based on a true story of a rescue in Antarctica in the winter. It involves Christchurch and McMurdo in the story with some wonderful cinematography.

That's your plane :D HOW FANTASTIC!!!

When Dex (my ex ;) was stationed at MacDill AFB during Vietnam war, we saw AND HEARD all of the military lineup of planes... and the Hercules was one of my favourites! I still get goosebumps when I see any flyovers from the bases in Michigan. They're most active during military airshows and several are stationed/housed at Michigan bases.

she's just passed her nurse practitioner boards [In reply to] Can't Post

and has a residency here in our state. We're so very proud.

Growing up there was always this idea that her older brother was "the smart one" and she was the "people one." He went to Harvard, la di da. Well, she set out to do him one better and has an MPH from Columbia, and got her MRN from Yale, TWO Ivy League schools, so there! (We're very proud of both of them.)

Fashionably late [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think I opened my computer once after clocking out of work Friday night - such a great feeling!

In terms of what's making me smile, I suppose a positive first visit with a new dentist is a very literal answer! I had a bad experience with the last one (when my uvula was swollen for 2+ weeks, yuck) so was a bit anxious about the dentist generally after that. My girlfriend booked me with hers and we had a dual appointment together, and I ended up really liking the place. They were very considerate of my anxiety due to the last experience and had great bedside manner so I'd be comfortable. Phew! One less thing to worry about now.

Another relief is that my dad had a successful heart procedure a few days ago. A relatively minor one, but still something that makes you lose some sleep thinking about it.

We're coming off of a rare streak of several nights in a row of dinners with various folks. I think my social battery for the next two weeks is depleted as a result. Dinner at home tonight never sounded so relaxing! Angelic

In the meantime, the Dodgers beat their somewhat new rivals (the San Diego Padres) in three straight games this weekend, so that was a pleasant surprise after a disappointing past few weeks. Almost time for playoff baseball!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I'll have a Dr Pepper for the road, please!

Join us every weekend in the Hobbit movie forum for this week's CHOW (Chapter of the Week) discussion!

The signs of Spring! [In reply to] Can't Post

Baby lambs frolicking! Heart

You'd had quite a good harvest of eggplant, hadn't you! How do you prepare them for freezing, so they stay hearty for moussaka, or do they naturally freeze well?

It will be fun to see what tomatoes develop from those seeds!

Thank you for the rescue story. We never appreciate what it takes to live and work in such remote areas - and to make emergency trips there.

Enjoy the warming days!

No computer for the entire weekend? [In reply to] Can't Post

Shocked!

Good news about having a great initial visit with the new dentist. And even better news about your dad's procedure!

Wow, that was really overdoing it on the dinners out! Occasionally is nice, but there's no place like home - and one's own kitchen. Smile

We're nearing playoffs? Uh-oh, I'd better be keeping better track of the Sox. I do expect the Dodgers in there, of course!

They seem to breed true [In reply to] Can't Post

(those particular tomatoes, I mean). They're orange, and look somewhat like one I've found on the 'net called Amish Orange Oxheart, but I don't know if that's what they "officially" are, as the original pack of mixed seeds gave no clue. They're very tasty, though! A few other varieties have now made their appearance, but the one I just call "Orange Tomato" will be one of the highlights.

I slice the aubergines and bake them before freezing, which gets rid of a lot of the water that would otherwise make them go mushy. After that they freeze very well - when cooked, more or less indistinguishable from fresh. Yes, we got a huge lot last summer; I may actually grow fewer this year! I'd cheerfully have twice the number of capsicums, though.

Yes, a great tale of Antarctic heroism - and of people from two different countries working together when one is in need.
