BUT... I still have all the stuff I need to get 'er done!
My little house had a couple of trees in the yard and was stark when I bought it. But I've been working on creating my own Fangorn Forest :D It's just been too blasted hot to get involved with those 2 projects that would take more than a few days to do But I haven't given up!!

His is was broken. He'd already lost her. What merciful timing for your Niece to appear. Such a lovely outing and perfect in its simplicity. Wonderful that she's coming back and will be within reach for these moments. One thing my Balti daughter says all the time, "I miss not being able to hang out." I'm so so sorry for your loss, Annael. Wow... *warm hug*

This week's been lovely - frosty mornings followed by brilliant days. On Friday we went to a regional park for a lovely walk along the beach, admiring oystercatchers and dotterels and gulls and just enjoying the sunshine. Then lunch in a particularly nice cafe that's a bit out of our way, so we only visit it when we go to that park. I'm a bit concerned that the cafe mightn't survive long-term, as the pottery it's on the grounds of is closing down, but at least we did our small bit to support it. The weekend, in contrast, is grey and gloomy so far, but that just means we appreciate the sunshine all the more. Still enjoying watching the mallards and putangitangi (native shelducks) conducting their courtships. And enjoying the new lambs gambolling on farms all around us. Yesterday we made moussaka (used some of those aubergines from last summer) and baklava - very nice, and also gave a nice lot of my favourite meal: leftovers. Then we watched "Tempest" (the 1982 Paul Mazursky movie) to keep the whole Greek theme going. The first of my seeds have germinated! A tomato variety I don't know the name of, as its original came in a "Heritage Mixed" packet years ago, and I've save seeds from it ever since. Hopefully the beginning of many. I know there are a fair few fans of both flying and Antarctica here, so you may enjoy this story: https://newsroom.co.nz/...ssion-to-antarctica/ Winter flights to the Antarctic are very much not for the faint-hearted! Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

and that of everyone who knew and loved John - he does sound an amazing man. But I'm so happy for you that your niece has come home! is this the niece who was on TORn for a little while many years ago? I remember her warmth and enthusiasm.

thinking of you as I posted it :) Those Hercs are such amazing workhorses, and a hugely important part of our Air Force. Yes, well done indeed to the crew.

Ohhh... I had some heritage tomatoes years ago, and they were the BEST I've ever had! And thank you for the fantastic article on the Herk rescue flight. There was a movie done years ago called "Eight Below" based on a true story of a rescue in Antarctica in the winter. It involves Christchurch and McMurdo in the story with some wonderful cinematography.

That's your plane :D HOW FANTASTIC!!! When Dex (my ex ;) was stationed at MacDill AFB during Vietnam war, we saw AND HEARD all of the military lineup of planes... and the Hercules was one of my favourites! I still get goosebumps when I see any flyovers from the bases in Michigan. They're most active during military airshows and several are stationed/housed at Michigan bases.

and has a residency here in our state. We're so very proud. Growing up there was always this idea that her older brother was "the smart one" and she was the "people one." He went to Harvard, la di da. Well, she set out to do him one better and has an MPH from Columbia, and got her MRN from Yale, TWO Ivy League schools, so there! (We're very proud of both of them.)
