Mr Kimi's grandmother [In reply to] Can't Post

was a Salvation Army officer as a young woman (she eventually married "out" and left the army behind), and did a lot of helping out when people had disasters of various sorts. Her son (my late f-i-l) said she always said floods were the worst of all. Fires, she said, destroyed but then they were over, and you were forced to start again from scratch. Floods destroyed, but left a huge mess to clean up, and belongings that you felt you had to try to recover, even when they were ruined. An interesting pov, anyway.

We, too, are safely above any flood risk. If our place is flooded, so is most of the North Island.

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

His mother wanted him to be born on the 4th, as a local grocery chain used to give large teddy bears to babies born on that date. But he decided to wait until a few hours past midnight :)

How classy! [In reply to] Can't Post

You had me at "waistcoat" - that's a rare thing to see a bloke wearing, these days!

For Betty to be getting at the bark like that, she MUST have some goat in her. Is she the one that's gotten into mischief before? Glad you were able to get the right tree!

late again [In reply to] Can't Post

Yesterday I spent mostly at the home of friends--farm really, they have 20 acres, huge garden, a flock of chickens and some sheep. They throw a big shindig every year. This is the group of folks I've known for some 40-odd years and we're into the third generation now. Quite a few rugrats running around having a great time, and yes, there were tears by the end as the sugar high ended and the (very limited) fireworks show put on by our host was over. One of the guests turned out to be from my home town, too young for us to have met up in high school, but his older brother was friends with my next-younger brother! Small world.

There's three of us who've been friends forEVER; they're the reason I moved up to this valley, and the last couple of years we've started a new tradition of birthday outings. We don't do them on our birthdays but sometime in the month. Today, we took the lightrail to downtown Seattle and visited the Spheres. Gorgeous! I have many beautiful pictures but as I have never managed to post any despite patient instruction - we suspect it's Chrome - I'll just link to info.

We wandered around downtown a bit, had sushi, then mochi doughnuts, took the lightrail back north, and I had a nap!

That was quite a party! [In reply to] Can't Post

Sounds like it was a lot of fun - and yes, small world! Shocked

I hadn't heard of the Spheres, so looked them up. What an awe-inspiring place! And visiting it with friends is even better. You three have a great tradition! Cool

Now that's how to do it! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

How wonderful that you have this wonderful family of friends that has grown through the generations :) Even the children of the children will hold these friendships through the years and (hopefully) continue this wonderful gathering of life-long friends! I love it that you have this to look forward to each year... something you can count on. Memories you'll always have of these gatherings you can warm yourself with just by thinking of them :D

I hope you're having a great holiday weekend!

The news from Texas is heart-breaking - [In reply to] Can't Post

and the death toll keeps rising. It's hard to imagine a river rising 26' in 45minutes - who can possibly survive that? Our weather is behaving reasonaby well at present and the garden's doing okay.

She has a way to go yet - [In reply to] Can't Post

it's been a traumatic couple of years. She had a fairly mild stroke, during the recovery from which she had to care for her husband who had cancer. He died in January and she's still finding her feet, but is moving forward. Thanks for the virtual coffee - and the delicious goodies to go with it!

Late, late, late [In reply to] Can't Post

Will take a look for any 4th of July leftovers still hanging around the Fiesta bar. Surely there must be some scraps still.

We had a nice long weekend and holiday. Some of the young nieces and nephews were around, and it was fun watching them experience fireworks for the first or second times.

One negative consequence, however, is that the air quality here on July 5th is atrocious, so we mostly stayed indoors on Saturday. Luckily Mother Nature brought some offshore winds that day, so it blew out of the area faster than in some previous years. I recall last year being especially brutal, as we essentially had no wind for 2-3 days, so all of that nasty bad air just plopped itself over the region and didn't want to leave.

We're looking at a mini-heatwave in a couple of days, so I'm going to try to get some extra outdoor time now before it gets nasty.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!

That is a downside to the displays [In reply to] Can't Post

If there's not sufficient breeze to blow the residue away. But what fun to watch fireworks! What ages were the kids?

Yep, heatwaves coming and going...and coming...so we all enjoy the good weather when we can. Just keep the sunscreen handy! Cool

Kids watching fireworks is the best! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

One of those times where watching them on TV just doesn't do it justice! The sounds and visuals are magical :D

I'm glad your weather cleared up a bit with the wind. Weird how the air gets so heavy with the stagnation. I hope you have ooodles of chances to get outside to play before the next front moves through :)
