Greetings, all and sundry, and welcome to Fiesta Friday! Allow me to get the smoothie mixers going and put some goodies out on the buffet - how about make-your-own ice cream treats today? There's plenty of yogurt, too, with mix-in fruits and nuts!
We had oppressive heat here earlier this week, but the cool front came through yesterday, and we've been enjoying lovely cool mornings and scattered showers. I've returned from an outing with the librarian I'd worked for - she just retired, so she and the gal who "replaced" me (my job was split up and she was given the library part) and I had breakfast together in a nearby town, then roamed through a little bookstore there. I managed to hold off and buy only two books, the other gals bought more!

Just kidding. I was hoping Connecticut would take one for the team and suck up all the heat on Tuesday to spare fragile, tender, Boston from discomfort, but alas, no, we got hit too. The heat wave killed my bedroom AC, but luckily the heat was brief, and even more luckily, I don't have to wait until December for my new AC--it gets delivered today! So I just need some weather seal to finish the job. (A friend has some, actually, but it's like duct tape, a guy can never have too much.) I suppose a nice iced mocha latte would be nice too, but I don't want to abuse my buffet privileges and get banned from yet another venue (*pretends backpack isn't full of bacon-wrapped scallops and fresh dinner rolls, and don't mind the dripping beef stroganoff*). 
Otherwise taking advantage of a weekend that 1) isn't rainy and 2) isn't too hot, to meet some friends for outdoor patio drinks and get caught up on our lives. Happy weekend, everyone, and stay cool if you're hot.

It's a good thing you've got an A/C unit on the way, the summer's just begun! But wasn't that a hot, humid scorcher?

I got out of New England just in time! Here in the NW corner we've been lucky with temps in the 60s/70s and some nice rain. They say the rest of the summer will be warmer than usual, but the 10-day forecast only gives us one day that we'll hit 80. I am very much NOT a hot-weather person and especially not a hot-and-humid person, so I'm grateful.
The next week has nothing much on the calendar besides two hiking trips with friends. It's a nice respite between all those trips I just took and a very busy July of dogsitting, catsitting, one long weekend away with the girlfriends, an informal high school reunion for the class before mine but they opened it up to our class and the class before them. That will be fun as I had quite a few friends in those classes. I also have two long scholarly articles coming in for an edit, from returning clients (always my favorite kind of job, I like building those relationships). And I'm beginning to work on two presentations I'll be giving in August and September.
Mostly I'm spending a lot of time cuddling the cat, who is extremely happy to be home again. They had dog gates to give him a whole section of the house away from the overly interested Samoyeds, but he slept for three days when we got home so I know he was stressed. I'll be arranging in-home care from now on.
I'm in the mood for a milkshake! One made with hot fudge sauce, with a banana blended in.

Thanks for the goodies! And yes, that heat & humidity was actually normal-ish when I lived in Kansas, but it's so abnormal here, that even in AC, I had a sinusy headache, and I was so glad it was over so fast. We're just not conditioned to that in New England. Next time we'll try to steer it all towards Rhode Island and spare Conn and Mass.

but the evenings are still very long (sunset 9.45pm tonight with a lingering twilight) and will be for some time. I enjoy them, but have no wish to be any further north or I'd have real trouble settling down to sleep. When it's light I always feel like I should be out doing something useful! It's been unseasonally windy today and rose petals have been swirling round the garden. I'll stick with the yogurt, fruit and nuts as a healthy option tonight; I have some weight to lose (again)! Two lots of physio appointments this week; one for shoulder, one for ankle. What a crock - ah well, it's all straightforward 'wear and tear' stuff. Cheers, folks!

Also, Tuesday is the day I volunteer at the local food bank. Being one of the younger and stronger people there, I usually spend about 10 hours lifting and stacking big boxes of food. All day I was looking forward to going home and jumping in the lake. When I finally got there, I found 9 ducks lazing around on the dock and leaving their "calling cards" all over it. I ran at them, yelling and stomping on the dock, and as they swam away I jumped into the lake and swam after them, chasing them at least a hundred yards. I hoped they'd get the message and not come back.
They came back. Stupid ducks.

That was a perfect trip! The dogs must have been too friendly for Charlie, I can imagine how happy he is to be back with his human.
Milkshakes with bananas are very healthy, of course. And you're going to need extra calories for all the things coming up in July! I'm assuming you're not doing the dogsitting and catsitting at your place? 
Can you give us a hint as to what you're planning to present?

I really should get room-darkening shades, that 5:00 sun does wake me up! That fascinated me when we visited Edinbugh: how light it was, at 11:00 at night.

That must be one movie which everyone in the world has seen, every time it's referenced, no one needs to ask!
Hauling boxes in that heat, whew! I'm glad my hubby got to stay inside on his day at ours (Thursday) where it's cool, handing out food, but he said they were slammed with folks coming by, much more than usual.
Er, you did watch where you were walking when you chased the ducks off, I hope?  I wonder if there's a ducks-B-gone spray?

For "too friendly" say "obsessively stare at cat while panting heavily." Samis have a high prey drive. Although they will stop when they come within slashing range, they don't back off, and it no doubt feels quite threatening.
Catsitting involves going to my neighbor's twice a day to feed her cat & spend some time providing a lap and scratches. She will do the same for me when I'm back in Seattle dog-sitting the aforesaid Samoyeds for a long weekend.
FIrst talk is on my book, for a conference on heroines & goddesses and what they have to teach us in these times. Second talk is on Ereshkigal, a Sumerian goddess, for a series of lectures on goddesses being put on by the International Society for Mythology.

and her sister Inanna is the queen of heaven. One of the earliest myths we have is "The Descent of Inanna" when Inanna goes to visit Ereshkigal and dies for three days in the cave then is revived. (Sound familiar?)

Well, Enheduanna looks a lot like Ereshkigal, so I was simply triggered.
Anyway, who's the first recorded author in humanity? Enheduanna, daughter of Sargon, priestess of the moon god in Ur. Wikipedia has more.
(Maybe next someone will mention math and Hypatia of Alexandria. I'm ready!)
