Collider Interview - Gollum set between The Hobbit and LotR? Can't Post

Andy Serkis answered some questions about Hunt For Gollum with Collider and says it's a "sizeable movie" -

https://collider.com/...-update-andy-serkis/

One thing I noticed here is the claim that the movie will take place between the events of LotR and The Hobbit. Despite what we heard from Boyens recently: “It’s quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria,” https://www.empireonline.com/...pa-boyens-exclusive/

I know this is likely a mistake by Collider. But I'm really holding onto hope that the production delay was created by the decision to move the events to before LotR. I just feel it would be a much more interesting story that way even if it's not as book accurate. I hope they've at least considered it and come to their own conclusion for what's right.

Interesting! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm looking forward to whenever the synopsis of the film comes out so we really know what we are getting with this story.

And if they will change the name as well!

Time [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree that the film would have more room to breathe if the main focus begins before Bilbo's party given that it seems to take place in the continuity of the Peter Jackson films. In Tolkien's original timeline Gandalf begins seeking for news of Gollum in the year 3001, right after Bilbo's birthday party, and the search begins in earnest in 3009 with Aragorn finally tracking down Gollum in 3017. Other events that take place during this period include:
- 3001: The doubling of the guard on the Shire.
- 3007: Brand son of Bain becomes King in Dale; death of Gilraen.
- 3009: Sometime over the next eight years Gollum enters Mordor and is captured by Sauron.
- 3017: Gollum is released from Mordor; Gandalf visits Minas Tirith and reads the scroll of Isildur.

If all of these events are not going to be crammed into a few (let's say 12) months then some of them will have to be pushed back by several years. Of course, if the Collider story is accurate, we might be privy to Gollum's activities before he enters Mordor, starting with his leaving his cave in the Misty Mountains to search for Bilbo and the Ring. Below I'll post my own estimated timeline of events for the film universe:

2940 - The Quest of Erebor. Bilbo meets Sméagol-Gollum and finds the Ring. Gandalf learns that the Necromancer is Sauron returned. The White Council drives the Necromancer out of southern Mirkwood. The Watchful Peace ends. The Battle of Five Armies. Death of Thorin II.
2941 - Bilbo returns to Bag End. Aragorn begins his period of great journeys and errantries.
2943 - Bard rebuilds Dale and becomes King. Gollum leaves the Mountains and begins his search for the 'thief' of the Ring.
2951 - Sauron declares himself openly in Mordor and sends three of his Nazgûl to restore Dol Guldur. Gollum turns towards Mordor.
2953 - The last meeting of the White Council. Saruman takes Isengard as his own and begins fortifying it.
2959 - Denethor weds Finduilas of Dol Amroth.
2961 - Birth of Boromir son of Denethor II.
2963 - Samwise Gamgee is born. Théoden becomes King of Rohan.
2964 - Aragorn leaves the service of Ecthelion II, the Steward of Gondor. Aragorn and Arwen are reunited in Lórien. About this time Gollum reaches the confines of Mordor and becomes acquainted with Shelob.
2965 - Meriadoc Brandybuck is born.
2966 - Faramir son of Denethor is born.
2967 - Death of Ecthelion II. Denethor II becomes Steward of Gondor. Bain son of Bard becomes King of Dale. Birth of Frodo Baggins.
2971 - Finduilas dies young.
2972 - Balin leaves Erebor to found a new dwarf-colony in Moria.
2973 - Peregrin Took is born.
2974 - Éomer Éomund's son is born in Rohan.
2977 - Balin is slain and the colony is destroyed.
2978 - Éowyn sister of Éomer is born.
2979 - Drogo Baggins and his wife Primula drown in a boating accident on the Brandywine, leaving their only child Frodo an orphan.
2983 - Saruman dares to use the palantír of Orthanc and becomes ensnared by Sauron who possessed the Ithil-stone. He becomes a traitor to the Council and he becomes curious about Gandalf's interest in the Shire.
2988 - Bilbo Baggins adopts his young cousin Frodo as his heir.
2990 - Brand son of Bain becomes King of Dale.
2991 - Death of Gilraen.
2993 - Gandalf seeks for news of Gollum and calls on the help of Aragorn. At intervals during the next eight years, they search in the vales of Anduin, Mirkwood, and Rhovanion to the confines of Mordor. At some time during these years Gollum himself ventured into Mordor, and was captured by Sauron.
3000 - Gollum is released from Mordor. He is taken by Aragorn in the Dead Marshes, and brought to Thranduil in Mirkwood. Gandalf visits Minas Tirith and reads the scroll of Isildur. After learning of Gollum's capture Gandalf questions the creature in Mirkwood. Bilbo celebrates his eleventy-first birthday and secretly leaves for Rivendell.
