Hi - only a day late! [In reply to] Can't Post

Our record-breaking dry spring has ended and we're in a run of showery westerlies now, much to the relief of gardeners and growers in particular. Everything is starting to flower well and I've just picked my first greenhouse cucumber of the season - munchy and crunchy! It's so interesting reading about the different weather challenges and growing seasons of all the TORnsibs in various parts of the world! One of the best rain songs is by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, I think - an oldie but a goodie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUH7PM0-cpI

Your first veggie! [In reply to] Can't Post

Excellent! Do you make pickles from your cukes?

The pileated woodpeckers have been quite noisy around here lately. Do you have any birds that make such a rat-a-tat-tat as they drill into trees for bugs?

The Ladysmith Black Mambazo guys have such smooth, soothing voices, I always love to listen to them! Heart

that he had a whole trove of those pieces, not just the one I've seen a few times. Wonderful how he's found solace through his expertise and Tolkien. I'm going to have to watch more of them. Thanks!

"Um, no, we don't actually duct tape airplanes." [In reply to] Can't Post

"That would be crazy and illegal. Um, that's called speed tape, and what speed tape is is just an aluminum tape that we as airplane mechanics will put onto certain parts of the air frame for little minor things like missing paint or as a temporary sealant. It's never actually holding anything together, and it's basically just used as a temporary repair until a permanent repair can be applied and for aerodynamic smoothness, kind of like Lord of the Rings after Frodo was stabbed by the Witch King on top of Amon Sūl, which is known as Weathertop, and the temporary repair for him by Aragorn and Sam was to find Athelas or Kingsfoil in the wild until Frodo was able to get across the Ford of Bruinen where he could ultimately be healed by Elrond in Imladris or Rivendale, except unlike Frodo we'll actually have a permanent repair for this, and Frodo's wound unfortunately will probably never fully heal."
".......This is what a roll of speed tape looks like. I don't think Aragorn could have used this to actually help with Frodo's wound, but I do think speed tape is actually pretty cool. So, yep!"

Thanks for the link, Meneldor! The words do not do justice to the delivery. Max has found a new fan.

And cheers to all the dedicated and airplane mechanics around the world!!!

Hi, nice folks! Yes, I'm still lurking, if not posting, regularly. [In reply to] Can't Post

Not much that's exciting is going on here, but there has been one nice thing I'd like to report.

Takina, our new convention centre in Wellington, is doing a great job of putting on delightfully geeky exhibitions. First we had Marvel, then Doctor Who, and now it's Disney.
So, on a rainy, windy, hella chilly Wellington day, three friends and I, who've seen the previous two shows together, took in this festival of fantasy fun.

The highlight for me, a child of the '50's who got to go to Disneyland the year it opened and vividly remembers every Disney animated film from big screen and tv in that era, was the original drawings of the artists who put those films together line by line, image by image, frame by frame. Unbelievable - the exactness of the drawings as they progressed step-by-infinitesimal-step. Here are a couple of my favorite images.

If the exhibit comes to a town near you, don't miss it!

Quote
"Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, dreams are forever." Walt Disney

And so, things are altogether copacetic at this end of the North Island for the moment. Cheerio! Wink

This is a very in-depth educational program for school kids, but I reckon us olders can have fun with it, too.
The video of Plane Crazy (1928) is bonkers. Mickey, you RAT! And YAY Mini Mouse! You go, girl! PirateWink

Did you say "Ice Cream"!!!!???? [In reply to] Can't Post

AWESOME! THANKS! I'll have a little of everything!

It's crazy busy around here right now, so I only have a minute... but I'll be back!

The only excitement I had was when I was going to the store in town on a 4-lane road. Traffic was stopped, and the 2 oncoming lanes were blocked by a BIG truck in each lane and the drivers (burley types) were walking around on the road. Come to find out there was a mama duck followed by 4 tiny ducklings trying to cross the road! Everyone in all 4 lanes stopped and smiled the whole time the one trucker nudged them along from behind until they were safely across :D MADE MY DAY!

I hope everyone is doing great! And I'm so glad you're having some nice weather breaks, Altaira :D Thanks for taking such great care of us!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK EVERYONE!

Make Way for Ducklings! [In reply to] Can't Post

That's a famous children's book about a similar event in Boston many a decade ago. So good that folks are still watching out for mama ducks and their little waddlers! Heart

Hopefully you're busy in a good way, gramma! Smile

of that kind of pickle to be honest; have pickled onions and beetroot in the past though. These will be going in salads. Round me the trees aren't the right kind to attract woodpeckers, though I hear them drumming in the country park in spring. Noisiest birds round here are magpies; their alarm calls sound like machine gunfire! Not a pleasant wake-up call in the early summer dawn... sun comes up around 4.45am at present.

Miserable yarding weather... [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope it has eased up. I know we were a lot the same, but a storm moved through on Monday with a sudden 10 degree drop in temperature and a 5-minute hail storm peltered us! The whole storm only lasted about an hour... but the cooler temps have stayed. It's been a really nice break! Hopefully it has made it to you by now :)

A day of remembrance, honour, and appreciation [In reply to] Can't Post

It was a good day here as daughter had an appointment at a VA office out of town. The senior rep we saw was very happy to have a conversation about D-Day when we brought it up. Times like that, the very air shifts and a special mood settles in for the day. :)

I hope you all had a great weekend! [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll bet your cousin had trouble drinking in all of the excitement and sights of Hollywood and the Walk of Fame! I know it blew me away! You know... my name is starred in the sidewalk straight across the street from the the Kodak Theatre (Dolby Theatre). A group of us were there for the RotK Academy Awards earlier in the day looking across the street at the front of the theatre when one looked down at our feet and saw my name! I don't claim the honour, but I do still claim my name whenever it's tossed out into the universe like that :D

I hope things have warmed up a bit. [In reply to] Can't Post

You know it's bad when you have to wear fingerless gloves! I'd love to look out my window and see a mountain, though... WOW! :D Farm country tends to like being flat.

AI stuff scares me. It's great for gathering or creating a base document, etc... but it's definitely NOT a finished product to be taken seriously until humanly scrutinized. To me it's like spell-check. It will tell you if something is spelled wrong, but it won't tell you if it's the wrong word. I'm afraid hard lessons like that one will be the only way to find and avoid the flaws.

I hope all is going great in your world :D Have a great week!

Just the lineup of exhibits you've mentioned has me drooling! I wish there was something nearby that would step into that rotation of shows :D HOW COOL! Do you think they'll have the LotR exhibit we had in Indiana years ago? I still feel like I'm back there whenever I think of it.

Thanks for this heads-up! SO COOL!

How green is your grass? [In reply to] Can't Post

VERY! :D And I love it when the trees and bushes get all that dirt and dust washed off. Things aren't only greener because they're getting deep drinks of water; but the crud floating in the sky gets washed away. Especially after such a long dry spell :)

ENJOY!

We got that rain Tuesday... [In reply to] Can't Post

Some good downpouring bucketsful, at times!

But we're supposed to get back into the mid-80's tomorrow. And Saturday is supposed to be "occasional showers", not good for the outdoors, but the church ladies are holding a Strawberry Shortcake Social that afternoon, so we'll just set up indoors! Yes, fresh-picked strawberries, they'll be gathered tomorrow morning, and we'll hull them Friday. Busy day on Saturday! Laugh

I've also got to make cookies - we put together bags of cookies to hand out to fathers (and non-father guys) on Father's Day. I'll be making my special original recipe which I call Lava Lumps (chocolate-choc chip sour cream lumps), also known as Orodruin Lava Lumps. Fiendishly decadent! Angelic
