Small out of order detail? Gandalf and Bilbo with the ring.....possibly discussed years ago

Bilbo calls the ring "my precious" and Gandalf says "it has been called that before"...however, Gandalf did not know it was The One ring at that time. He did not know of Isildur's detailed story. Bilbo did not address the ring when he told the dwarves how he escaped, Gandalf may have had his suspicions aroused so off he goes to Minas Tirith for research.

I think there is an easy explanation for this. By the time of Bilbo's farewell party Gandalf had already squeezed the true account of the hobbit's encounter with Gollum from him and Bilbo had described how Gollum would mutter about his "Precious". Gandalf simply made the mental leap to connect "Precious" with the Ring and not just Gollum himself.

That would make the most sense - to infer the likely interactions and retelling of events.

I always assumed he was referring to Gollum, since at this point in the film, we’ve only seen Gollum refer to it as “precious” in the prologue
