On vacation this week on the Fundy shore, I posted some pictures on Facebook. To my surprise and pleasure, old Reading Room veteran Modtheow commented that she was vacationing on the north shore, not more than an hour away.
Naturally we had to get together, and the next day my wife and I drove over to her summer getaway house. She and Mr Modtheow served us a delicious patio lunch, while we reminisced about the Reading Room's days of glory, her continuing efforts to teach Tolkien as part of her Middle English curriculum at the Halifax university where she is a professor, and (politely) our differences on the 'Rings of Power' series.
It was so much fun to finally meet the formidable Modtheow in person -- a charming, gracious, and funny woman in the best TORn tradition. I hope we can do it again sometime!

I'm back here in the old stomping grounds! This is the second time recently that someone has called me a "veteran" so I guess that means I'm old. It seems unbelievable that I was first on the boards -- when?-- maybe as much as 20 years ago?
We did have a lovely summer afternoon reminiscing about the Reading Room and discussing RoP. I couldn't believe that after all these years I finally got to meet one of the Powers of the Reading Room in person! Thank you for your kind words, Squire, and yes, come again soon!
