As I've been thinking. And in no particular order, sorry about this, it's just how my thoughts happen. But here, Bilbo with the Baggins side to his character says that he would give up the treasure just to be back home. Or a drink of beer from Beorn's cups. Maybe exchange a wooden cup with beer for the golden one he just pinched perhaps? Then again, why something from Beorn? What about a beer from the Green Dragon or the Prancing Pony? Though I am not sure what the exchange rate would be. Also, speaking of alcohol, I wonder if in their efforts to escape, the Dwarves left any bottles of wine in any cellars which of course Smaug would find no use of. Would be fully mature by now!
However, here we have the Baggins side of Bilbo taking over. Which it does from time to time, but then the Took side re-appears when Bilbo is too comfortable. I almost think that Bilbo is split like Gollum//Smeagol with the Bilbo Baggins and Bilbo Took parts of him, though not as much as Gollum/Smeagol, obviously. But even later he never seems to quite reconcile the two parts of his personality. Or possibly he does.
Another part of this chapter is the looking around the Dwarf kingdom. Which in this re-read I find quite interesting, it is easy to miss some of these descriptions when reading the Hobbit without paying too much attention. We have descriptions of the palace, described as a nasty hole by Bilbo at first, but contradicted by Thorin. We have views of the land from inside the Lonely Mountain, walks by people around it. Balin says that the march from the Lonely Mountain to a look-out point is five hours. Which strikes me as a bit far. If one walks say 3 miles per hour that makes it 15 miles or so. Quite some distance for one mountain!
Also, I find it interesting to see descriptions of the feasting and council chamber. Though I do wonder what councils where taking in that room. 'Is there a Dragon coming? No? Still not coming? Good lets take a nap or feast. Blinking fire, what is that attacking?' Or maybe perhaps 'lets look at our king going mad with Gold lust!' Although to be fair, they must have done some good to have Gandalf thinking that the kingdom should be restored.
Oh, and Mr. Narrator makes a brief appearance just to tell us about Cram! He doesn't know the recipe, but then again he doesn't know the recipe to Lembas either! With the description of Cram, I've been wondering what modern foods or snacks that reminds me of!
