***A Founders Day Scavenger Hunt*** Can't Post

And yet there lie in Denethor's hoards many records that few now can read, even of the lore-masters,
for their scripts and tongues have become dark to later men.

And thus it is with TheOneRing.net. But we are going on a scavenger hunt!

I will post a series of questions. The answers all lie within the domain of TheOneRing.net. My goal is that all who seek to be one of the 'few that now can read" find the answers using any method at your disposal is good (remember: Google is your friend). I will give you some resources to get you started and a few hints along the way.

Every question will focus on one area of TORn and if you find the answers you seek, you will be awarded a special, collectible (digital) medallion - one for each area.

So, get out your torches. Bring along those goblets of drink. And dig through the scrolls of TORn.
Just like Gandalf said the Ring wanted to be found, I want you to find the answers. I want to make it enough of a hunt that it is fun... but my goal is not to stump you so completely that you don't have a chance to experience some of the wonderful stuff in the depths of TORn.

I will provide links to get you started and hints along the way. You are welcome to use Google's site search if you know how.

Please don't put any answers in the subject line of your posts. You can post answers for as many questions as you find answers for and you can come back to add more answers over time.

Hunt #1: Quickbeam's Out on a Limb

Quickbeam's Out on a Limb is found in what used to be known as "GreenBooks." Now, the link to GreenBooks on the Home Page is called "Library." Here's a link to the area.

Why - a little over a year before the release of FOTR - did Quickbeam ask that we all chant twice a day: "This is not MY film-It's Peter's film. This is not my film-it's Peter's film"?

Bonus #1: can you find the image that prompted this train of thought?

Hunt #2: Tookish's Ticklers

Tookish's Ticklers is, like Quickbeam's Out on a Limb, found in GreenBooks. It is worth copying the intro for this section:
Welcome to TheOneRing.net's Lord of the Rings & J.R.R. Tolkien humor section! This area contains a wide range of comedy for the Tolkien fan. Please be aware that some entries may be vulgar, or contain profanity or other inappropriate content for some readers. Movie and story spoilers may also be present! Parent supervision is advised. Caution: reading this page in the wee hours may disrupt sleeping family... Enjoy!
There are 6 areas in Tookish's Ticklers. To find items in each section, click on the 'archives' link next to each subhead. [ Writings Archive ] - [ Filk Song Archive ] - etc

How many Tolkien purists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
(Remember, the goal is to find the answer in Tookish's Ticklers. The goal is not to write your own answer to this joke. Although, no one will be penalized for doing so!)

Bonus #2: What your favorite tickler in Tookish's Ticklers?

Hunt #3: Tehanu's Notes

Now we're leaving GreenBooks and wandering into Features to visit Tehanu's Notes. Interestingly, none of these 'notes' are dated. I suppose each was announced on the Home Page so a search of the archives for news articles might reveal the dates. I remember the last note she wrote (in this Old Archive section of TORn - she's written a few more for the new WordPress format) so I know the first note she wrote is first in the list and the last note she wrote is last in the list.

After the release of ROTK, Tehanu asked, Where to From Here? and observed that "TORN was about more than just spy reports on the movies". What did she say it was?

Bonus #3: Tehanu wrapped up this note by asking again, "What to look forward to now that the movies are as good as done?" What answer does she give?

Hunt #4: Main News Archives

This scavenger hunt takes place in the Main News Archives. you can find these archives by following the 'Old TORn Site' link (left navigation bar) and then clicking the 'Archives' link.

What was TORn's 2004 April Fool's Joke?

Bonus #4: What did they have to say about it the next day?

Hunt #5: GreenBooks Questions and Answers

This is a section of TORn that I used for quite a time after the movies came out. If I was trying to answer someone's question, I often came to Q&A to see if TORn already had. If so, I would link the person here. I'd love to hear if anyone else ever dug around in the Q&A's and what they thought of them.

Here's the home page for the Questions and Answers section of Greenbooks.

Where did Ostadan get the idea that baby Dwarves have beards? (posted 09/01/01)

Bonus #5: Ostadan weighed in on what question prompted by the Battle of the Five Armies scene in The Hobbit? (posted 04/01/02)

Special Edition Scavenger Hunt

Warning! This Special Edition Scavenger Hunt is for the stout-hearted only!

This hunt involves 10 links. At the end of each link lies a spooky, scary, eerie, or disturbing or just plain Halloweeny image residing in TORn' Scrapbook. Normally, visiting TORn's Scrapbook is a fun, lighthearted venture. But not today. Today... the way is as dark as the Paths of the Dead.

Your task, should you take it on, will be to visit these links and return (if you can) to tell us what lies on the other side. Double points will be given for witty answers. But I don't suggest you visit them. No, I don't (do I, precious?). I suggest you back out of this thread as quickly as Farmer Maggot's dog backed away from that Black Rider. He was smart.

Are you?

For those who just won't listen, here are the links.

  1. This link is beyond any of you. Run!
  2. What madness would drive you in there?
  3. Flee! Flee for your lives!
  4. Dark have been the links of late.
  5. None who venture here ever return. This link is evil
  6. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
  7. You are naked in the dark with no veil between you and the wheel of fire!
  8. Fly you fools!
  9. Leave now and never come back!
  10. Don't follow the link!

I'll post the answers and the medallions a few days from now.

Have fun!
