I was thinking maybe the Dwarves could "outfloat" the Orcs if they got past the gates, but you're right...they probably would have been lying in wait for them along the way. And even Bombur would have been a mere crushing barrel rather than a crushing barrel bristling with weapons! 
But don't forget they still had Sting! The pressure would really have been on for Bilbo to save the day in that case!
