1) What are your thoughts on the overall composition of the image? Most times I am not conscious of the composition of shots on first viewing, but I remember being aware of it in this shot the very first time I watched. Very dramatic, very forceful in highlighting Aragorn’s moment of transition. 3) What do you think about the music in this scene as Elrond presents Andúril to Aragorn and how it helps to symbolise the fact that the time of the elves is fading, while the time for men is coming? I love this music. Well-spotted in terms of the Rivendell music and the concept of the passing of the age. There is a great deal of storytelling in the Anduril music and its central theme “Minas Tirith”. This theme is introduced in FotR when Boromir is talking to Aragorn about hope (or lack thereof) and his desire to see the glory of Gondor restored, concluding with his hope that their paths would lead to the White City one day. The same theme reaches its ultimate variation at the opening shot of the coronation, where it gets merged with the other basic Gondorian theme and Aragorn’s music into a musical restoration of the glory of Gondor. This Anduril presentation music fits neatly into what I think is a musical cycle for Aragorn. I wrote a long post about it here: http://newboards.theonering.net/...ead%20on.%22;#438424 Anyway, the music makes this scene transcendent for me – very emotional and powerful when put into context with the origin of the motif (and the ending of FotR.) 4) Do you like how this line was used here? Yes. I didn’t realize for a long time what the origin of the quote is. Now, when I watch the scene, it seems as though Elrond is familiar with and quoting Gilrean’s dying words, and Aragorn is finishing the quote. Very moving.
