I'm not surprised they were cut. I didn't think they were in the LotR style, and the authors of Ring of Words agree:
Tolkien delighted in certain kinds of jocular wordplay. He seems to have enjoyed extending ordinary words by adding a suffix which did not quite 'fit', as for example with staggerment, a word of which he was particularly fond. ... He had a particular weakness for such forms of verbal whimsy when he was consciously writing for children, as in The Father Christmas Letters (a 'thinnuous elf', a pun on fatuous) or Roverandom ('the rhymeroyals and the pennywhistles, the tintrumpets and the creamhorns, a very pale cream'). The same rather avuncular vein runs through both The Hobbit (confusticate and bebother) and the early drafts of the opening of its sequel (HME VI. 11ff.), where we find flabbergastation, grabsome, and vanishment. Such coinages were weeded out as it became clear that The Lord of the Rings was to be more serious in intent. - Gilliver, P. et. al. (2006). The Ring of Words: Tolkien and the Oxford English Dictionary. Oxford U. Press. 79. Oh, how did I find this rather obscure quote? I googled "grabsome" and the only place it showed up as a word rather than a typo for 'grab some' was in the Tolkien Gateway website's "unsorted" list of topics under "Tolkien's inspirations/notes", with a reference to Ring of Words! I wasn't surprised; RoW is just the kind of book to zero in on JRRT's extraordinary vocabulary to the point of examining words he never even published.
