I have no doubt that he saw something like that and thought Sam's thoughts, and the incident made such an impression that it was still clear in his mind's eye decades later. Yes, I think so too. It's also one of the passages I discuss in my TAS piece (which appears this Thursday, 21 November). I will be explaining why I think that particular passage has some clever writerly stuff.
