poor Bilbo. I would have taken the Kili/Elf male/Dwalin joke anyday over the stick insect, the belching and the blowing nose of Tom the troll.

And, also, I will add that Gimli's remains a big deal because it is such and admiring infatuation,. Now, I agree, a Kili enamourment of Tauriel could seriously damage that, but not this scene. Gimli is in awed adoration of Galadriel (and Legolas Tongue Laugh sorry, couldn't resist), and that is very different from a rudimentary lust. A person can lust after someone whom they otherwise entirely disdain, distrust and generally dislike. To be enamoured is another thing entirely.

Of course attraction takes many forms. It's the why of it. Why was it included? What's the point? For a laugh? For the ladies? Have the "hot" dwarf have a go at the new lady elf? The whole thing seems kind of dumb and calculated but ultimately pointless.

And if Kili is amourous towards elves all the way in the first (of six) films, what's the big deal when Gimli is enchanted with Galadriel three films later? It's like they're turning a major character development into a "cheeky" joke.

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."
