Black seems so obviously drab for him. I think his costume was to try to visually convey to the audience that there was a shadow inside as well as outside Minas Tirith. To me it reflects the dark clouds from Mordor outside. Also they may have wanted him to be dressed in black as he is in mourning for Boromir.
What's this? A Ranger caught off his guard?
