I bring up this book again, because I know you've read it and it is relevant here. I think Tolkien meant that we needed many kinds of environmentalism -- not just "feraculture" of the Ents or agrarian of the Hobbits (and Entwives) but a combination of them. A bit of feraculture and a bit of agrarian (combined with the conservationist Elves). That marries (if you will!) our need for food as sustenance as well as the rest of the world's need to keep some areas free from active management. I like the idea that the Ents that marched with Merry and Pip woke up to a kind of ownership -- at least the type that would not allow ownership by a completely destructive force. I get the sense that they might have taken a more active role in forest management after all this -- but not necessarily a "herding the trees" role but a more protective one? I agree Telain, and that's an excellent way of describing the types of management that JRRT ascribes to the respective Ent genders. In Ents, Elves and Eridaor the authors use the word stewardship in describing the ideal in regarding our ecological responsibility. I would also say that maybe that word - stewardship - is just about the middle ground of the two extremes. They use that term a lot in EE and E, and it really applies very well under the circumstances: assistance, shepherding and management without ownership, and also with the implication of passing that ecological inheritance on to another generation. So in both genders, a shift would be needed to actually embrace stewardship and balance need and nature: the Wives would need to perhaps allow more 'natural' aspects to the feraculture, and the Ents need to take a more active role in the defense and awareness of the ecosystem as a whole. Sadly for the Ents, 'stewardship' with its full impact of passing the riches on to new life falls short, as they have drifted far enough apart to doom their race. The only hope for them is that their stewardship can pass to another - I am guessing JRRT would hope very much that the new stewards of the Earth would be us, as inheritors of the land?
Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!
