the evolution of the Ents, that is. I think they do need to cope with their Valar-abandonment, and I wonder if we can draw some comparisons between how they handle it and how the Elves did. Elves rebel: build civilizations, fight Morgoth, help bring about the awakening of the Atani Ents fall back to sleep: lose Entwives, forests become unwieldy and wild, Ents are not even aware of some creatures (like Hobbits!) Perhaps Ents are more the cautionary tale here: if you are faced with some difficulty and you respond by hiding away from the world, then you are bound to lose more than if you had faced it head-on. I am not saying that the Elves' losses were not tragic, but they were remembered. Conversely, Merry only vaguely understood what an Ent might be (a tree-herder) and Treebeard had no idea what Merry and Pippin were (thinking at first they were enemies.) I know this is a theme that runs through much of Tolkien's works (the Hobbits themselves are another example of "hiding"), but i had not thought of the Ents in quite that way before... It occurs to me too (came across a bit about the Ents while looking for something else. Typical.) that JRRT seems to define the happy medium by describing the two extremes in the Ent genders. We have the Wives, "gardeners", who till and work but change and manipulate the land and the flora, to get the results they want. Then we have the Ents, who monitor without possessiveness or any ownership. The state of the Ents who march with Merry seem to have arrived at a midpoint between the ideals. They are not as 'possessive' as the Wives, yet they have awoken rom complete 'dispossession' to claim some ownership over their fate, and the fate of their trees.
Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!
