Wouldn't [In reply to] Can't Post

Tolkien identifying the Elven King as Thranduil confirm the Elven King as Thranduil?

You make an interesting point about a visual introduction to Tolkien's world with either LoTR
or the Hobbit. Perhaps LoTR's legacy is inviolable for me in that it really was my first experience
with the world of Middle-Earth. Maybe there is a bit of a bias, then, on my part.

Additionally, perhaps there is no inherent 'flaw' with the Hobbit thus far; some of a tepid reception might
stem from the Hobbit following what's been done and seen already, in some instances.

Yet, I am still not sure that it is entirely precedent bias that informs my perception of the the Hobbit thus far.
What I describe may simply be the music toward my conclusions, but think back to Fellowship of the Ring and
then AUJ with their respective speeches on the irony of small. In FoTR, Galadriel tells Frodo that small can
change the course of the future. In AUJ Gandalf says that the small/little things of "love" and "kindness" hold
back the dark. Now, I don't believe that the efficacy of the latter is contingent on the pre-existence of the former.
Even if the former has the advantage of novelty, it doesn't excuse the latter's 'kindness' and 'love,' which feels
a bit weird in the particular context of the story. It's possible that it feels too much for us the audience. But maybe
it works well for others. Thoughts?
