About the exterior, at least. It has a truly gorgeous Petra/Babylonian vibe, which I find appropriate. The interior seemed a bit too space-age, and thus less connected to historical reality. Same goes with what we've seen of Thranduil's halls. Seems more like a multi-leveled video game dungeon than an actual place, with its series of platforms, etc.

IMO, the exterior of Erebor is, next to Edoras and Bag End, the best-designed location in all 4 films.
