I really like your idea that the Sun and Moon are living memorials. It gives them a little something extra in terms of meaning (if one were really imaginative, I suppose one could see the full crown of a tree in the full Moon...)

Your post prompted me to think about this desire for no-change as a realization that they (i.e., the Valar, but I suppose you could also extend it to the Noldor) really went wrong and are feeling responsible -- not only for the lessening of their own happiness, having surrounding themselves with their greatest creations only to have them destroyed -- but for making the world lessened for everyone else. Guilt and regret can be very overwhelming emotions and the Valar are now really starting to understand just how naive -- and how irresponsible -- they have been.
